Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney

Pros funny, clever, kept me interested, covered many different things chronologically
Cons Greg can be pretty mean to his "friend"
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a good book about some of the struggles one fiction boy has in middle school.
We let my son watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid and after watching it he wanted to read the books as he'd seen them in Scholastic Book Orders and his school's book fair. I ended up borrowing Diary of a Wimpy Kid from the library to read with my six year old.

I understand that many of the scenarios in the book are ones my son won't even have the opportunity to encounter for quite some time, but the book has lots of illustrations and some funny situations. Also reading it together I could talk to my son about how some of the things Greg, the diary (or as he calls it journal) writer, does aren't particularly nice or the best solutions to the situations he finds himself in.

The book spans a school year and is written by (the fictional) Greg Heffley. His best friend is Rowley and Greg, throughout the diary, deals with fitting in, standing out, being cool, and what it means to be a friend. There are many situations where we see Greg's creativity, like making weights from jugs filled with sand. But there are also times when we see Greg really abuse his friendship with Rowley.

Greg seems like a typical, small for his age, middle school boy. He worries about his height. He dislikes his teenaged older brother who plays tricks on him. He envies his younger brother (who is 5 I think) who seems to get everything he wants and never gets in trouble.

He lets his friend get in trouble for him when he is the one that did something wrong. He gets mad when his friend doesn't share credit on a project they did together. But ultimately he mostly listens to his parents, mostly wants to be there for a friend, and while he definitely looks out for number one, isn't such a bad kid. He is far from perfect and this comes across well in his journal, that he is probably pretty normal.

The book  is by Jeff Kinney and has lots of cartoon illustrations throughout. Greg is skinny. Rowley is fatter. Many of the older kids have big noses and facial hair. His little brother is teeny tiny. The drawings are exaggerated, because, well sometimes kids exaggerate things in their mind, and this is supposed to be a kid's take on the world. I thought the illustrations were a great way to help tell the story.

The movie was actually very close to the book with few changes. I liked that too. This is a great school year, told through the eyes of a wimpy kid. We laughed, got frustrated, and enjoyed this book a lot.
