Dana Hand - Deep Creek

Dana Hand - Deep Creek

In the year 1887, 30 massacred Chinese laborers are found floating in the Snake River in a remote part of the Iowa Territory. Judge Joe Vincent is hired by the Sam Yup company to track down the men who murdered its employees. Accompanied by Lee Loi, a company investigator, and Grace Sundown, a Native-American guide, Vincent travels into Hell's Canyon to bring the killers to justice--a justice that proves elusive even when the men are brought to trial. DEEP CREEK, a riveting literary western based on real historical events, shows the ugly and racist elements upon which America was founded.

Pros Historical fiction as it should be.
Cons Not a beach read: you need to pay attention. Looks plain; isn't.

I thought this was a Western. I was wrong. It deserves to be a classic. The premise is familiar--lawman goes after bad guys--but it's the one-man-against-the-town quality of the story that hooked me.
