#5 in the "Gifts of Harry" Book Review Series

bythewasp Jan 1, 2010

Pros Vivid portrayals of life in India under the Raj
Cons Book II is a little slow in the beginning
Recommended it? Yes

"A Passage to India" is set mostly in Chandrapore, India, in the early 1920's.  Earlier today, just before finishing the book, I looked up Chandrapore in an atlas.  Forster places it on the Ganges, which doesn't seem to be the case in reality; but this is a minute complaint to hold... "A Passage To India": Bridging Cultural Gaps

byserpico Sep 1, 2003
13 Helpfuls 14 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros E.M. Forster's narrative style
Cons Nothing.
Recommended it? Yes

E.M. Forster's A Passage To India is a novel concerned with cultural disharmony that lay in British Colonial India in first part of the twentieth century. The novel adheres to Forster's inclination for concise, and compacted social exposition, wherein a single narrative encapsulates a much more... Read full review »

A short passage about India

byjohnkerr Feb 24, 2000

Pros masterful character studies, great English
Cons huge moral issue not quite in tune with our times
Recommended it? Yes

Ambitious multi-racial picnic at spooky Marabar caves ends in disarray when Kensington intellectual, Adela Quested, throws a wobbly. "The British and the Indians must keep their place"; mocks college principal, Fielding, but the English Club of Chandrapore take him literally and unite in prejudice... Read full review »

Pros tightly plotted, interesting
Cons the ending
Recommended it? Yes

I admit it. For once in my life I actually saw a movie before reading the book it was based on. Now, I try hard to never do this. (Read all three Lord of the Rings books in a few weeks to avoid seeing 2 Towers before finishing the trilogy) And yet, somehow, I saw Double Indemnity the movie three... Read full review »

Pros Cracking good story.
Cons Inadequate grasp of spiritual realities.
Recommended it? Yes

Despite the irony in my heading, I do think this is a great novel. I admire E.M.Forster because he was able to tell a cracking good story while
conveying a serious message.
The semi-upper-middle class English in the book are a young woman,Adela Quested, her aunt Mrs.Moore, her fiance... Read full review »

Cons except if he's describing calcutta
Recommended it? Yes

"What does unhappiness matter when we are all unhappy together?"

I find this statement to be very meaningful. It is an Urdu proverb shared by Dr. Aziz with the guests of the Bridge party. The reason that I find this line so profound is because of the importance it places on community. When... Read full review »
