Go right ahead and put this book side by side with Exodus, or Trinity, and try to determine how the same author wrote both books... Where those were engaging, cleverly crafted, well-researched and written, A God in Ruins is simply awful.

Where to begin ? How about the characters. Quinn... Read full review »

Pros A Quick Read, fast paced
Cons True Fiction, not as in depth as Uris' other classics
Recommended it? Yes

A self-made billionaire, building a super computer from the bowels of his father's junkyard, now is President of the United States and his opponent, the squeaky clean, righteous, Governor of Colorado, who is looking to become the second Irish Catholic President in history. Et tu, Leon?

Pros I got it at a garage sale, cheap.
Cons It wasn't worth the quarter I spent on it.
Recommended it? No

I was first exposed to Leon Uris's books as a young Marine, off to serve in Operation Desert Storm. His first novel, Battle Cry, was a fine portrayal of young Marines in WWII -- and based on Uris's own experiences in that war.

From there, I moved on with a thirst -- Exodus, Mila 18,... Read full review »

Axe to grind?

Pros Leon Uris' storytelling magic
Cons An incredible antigun propaganda line
Recommended it? No

I think I have read every novel that Leon Uris has written over the years and he has always been one of my favorite authors.
HOWEVER, "A God in Ruins" has overshadowed a good storyline with an overkill of blatant anti-gun propaganda that is all too prevalent in today's media. I don't know if... Read full review »

Pros I am thankful that it was not longer.
Cons It is much longer than it should be.

I got this book solely based upon the author.  It taught me that this is not the failsafe method of book purchase it used to be.  It is simply an awful book.  Sadly, the only conclusion that is possible after reading this book is that someone else wrote it and Mr... Read full review »

This book grabs your attention from the very beginning. A truly honest man, Quinn O'Connell, is running for US president in the year 2008. The reader gains insight into his character through a series of flashbacks which explain O'Connell's interesting history, beginning with his adoption into a... Read full review »

Pros Fast paced. Interesting.
Cons Painfully predictable ending

This is the first Uris book I have read, and I enjoyed it enough to move onto his other works. What I enjoyed about this novel is its' irony - every stadium in the country is owned by a corporate conglomerate, the recent news-worthy military plane (The Osprey), is represented (however, in Uris'... "We the People..."

Pros An informative "What if" story about the ins and outs of democracy.
Cons Somewhat difficult to follow if one is not used to a non sequential timeline writing...
Recommended it? Yes

"A God in Ruins", while not all that difficult of a read from a technical standpoint, may well be deemed a nightmare by anyone uninitiated to a writing style such as that of Tom Clancy or Patrick Robinson. Though Uris has a markedly different writing style than the aforementioned overall, one... Read full review »
