The Posthumous Pulitzer
In 1981, twelve years after committing suicide, John Kennedy Toole was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer prize for his novel, ?A Confederacy of Dunces.? It was not a case of the judges immortalizing the dead simply for having died, as often happens in literary circles. Instead, the Pulitzer...

A Confederacy of Dunces - Ignatius Reilly: Genius or Dunce - You decide
Once upon a time, I struck up a conversation with a woman in a garage sale over the shelf of sale books. We both reached for John Irving's The World According to Garp at the same time and laughed. We talked for awhile and she said that if I loved Garp then I just had to read John Kennedy... Read full review »
A COMIC MASTERPIECE WITH A TRAGIC TWIST
Many of us on this site are aspiring writers. Some are even published authors. "A Confederacy of Dunces" is an inspired work of art that ranks among the funniest books I've ever read. And, yet, there is a sad postscript to the tale. The author, John Kennedy Toole, could not get the novel published... Read full review »
Ooo Wee! True Genius: A Confederacy of Dunces
One night in the summer of 1986, I was thumbing across the spines of books that sat on a friend's bookcase when one title caught my eye. I pulled the book from its place on the shelf and read the blurb on the back cover. I asked my friend if I could borrow this book. I went home that night and read... Read full review »
Some of the best dialogue in a book I've ever read.
I know way too many people like Ignatius J. Reilly-not exactly like him, but who have certain nuances that just can?t be swayed. Heck, I even find a bit of him in myself, which I find highly disturbing. Welcome to the socially inept misfit secret-elite. You have an opinon about every little thing... Read full review »
Slapstick humor with an advanced degree
Have you ever marvelled at someone who has no ability to look at themselves and see themselves for what they are? Whether it's someone who wears too revealing clothes for their body, who dates women far too young for them, etc., we all know these people. Ignatius J. Reilly is perhaps the funniest... Ignatius could have a cult following
I had to read this book for a New Orleans lit class and I think it was one of the most ingenius books I ever read. Unfortunately the author committed suicide before he could give us anything else. The book is supposedly semi-autobiographical. Parts of the author's life were taken to make the story... Read full review »
A Confederacy of Disgusting Dunces
Ignatius J. Reilly is a revolting genius-madman who lives a life of laziness and self-righteous egocentricism. A Confederacy of Dunces chronicles the life and capers of Ignatius. From harassing his poor alcoholic mother to selling hot dogs in the French Quarter, Ignatius seems to always be near... Read full review »
You'll never look at a hotdog stand in the same way
Written by the late John Kennedy Toole, A Confederacy of Dunces is whole-heartedly a character-driven comedy, and a tremendous contribution to American literature.
The book opens with Ignatius Reilly, who may very well be the most disgusting lead character ever in a novel. He is a grossly...

Oh, my God! Do I believe what I am reading?
I had no interest in reading this book, because its title sounded truly dull. I flipped open the book and landed right on a page where someone was talking, and he used the words "ax" (as in "ax you a question") and "nucular." I squealed with delight and ran home to read it. I was not disappointed... Read full review »
