Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Toy: Lulu's favorite new hobby
Pros
Really good at keeping your dog occupied and challenged.
Cons
I have to keep it filled with treats! :))
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Unique toy keeps your dog occupied at "working" to get a treat.
We were in Toys R Us looking around one day lately (we went in to find a Rubik's Cube) and I came upon the pet's section. I hadn't remembered Toys R Us having a pet section at all from my old days of shopping there when my sons were small. Well, they have a pet section now!
I was browsing for a few minutes and found the Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Toy. I had remembered how a dog we babysat for once (for a month) had a similar toy and loved it. I purchased this on a whim, thinking our pug, "Lulu" would like it too.
Got home and cut it out of that tough clear plastic container it came in. The entire toy is a solid bright blue color, as in the photo. This is a color that's easy for dogs to see apparently. Great idea - that way they don't lose it and can find it easily when they want to play.
One of the selling points is that they say the scent appeals to dogs. I sniffed it and it smelled like rubber to me, although the makers claim that the scent appeals to dogs because it is made to smell like both protein and vanilla. So what's wrong with my nose?
The Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Toy has a rounded cross cut-out shape in one end of the toy/dumbbell. The idea is that this is where you can put treats, so your dog has to work at getting the treats out. You wedge a biscuit into the cut out area of the toy/dumbbell and your dog works at getting at it and eventually will succeed at getting it out thereby achieving his/her reward for his/her hard work. Dogs like a challenge!
Our dog, Lulu (who is 6 years old) basically had zero interest in this toy until I put the treats inside of it. We actually have some small treats that fit all the way inside the toy/dumbbell. I pushed about 5 of them into the cut out hole. I could hear them when I shook the dumbbell. This is when Lulu became very interested in what I was doing. I placed it on the floor and she went right for it.
This seems like a rather large toy for Lulu. It measures five inches in length and is about two inches wide on the ends and one inch in the middle. By the way, Lulu has another smaller similar "bone" shaped toy, that she ignores, but it does not have the hidden treat feature. This Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Toy almost seems like it's too large for her, but she is diligent working at it, pushing it around and holding it between her paws.
It was really fun to watch her work at it for several minutes on end. It keeps her occupied for a long time (and time after time). She gets rather excited as she pushes it and pulls it with her paws, sometimes standing and sometimes lying down. You can almost see the wheels in her little brain turning as she tries to figure out how to get the treats out of it. She even growled at it once or twice. She also pounces on it like a kitten might. She is successful at getting the treats out too, I should add. Another method that I have been using is to break a regular bone shaped dog biscuit in half and push it part way into the snug hole. Lulu has to work at pulling that out as well.
The Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Toy is a 'quiet' toy also. You won't hear it making any noise, or squeaking sounds, which is nice. Lulu has not destroyed this toy at all. It is very thick, sturdy rubber. I suppose it could possibly be torn apart by a more aggressive dog, but we have not had any problems whatsoever with that. In fact, the makers say that this rubber is so tough that it exercises your dog's jaw muscles.
This Booda Dogzilla Dumbbell Dog Toy cost me $7.00 at Toys R Us. We're very happy with this purchase because it is a good value and a quality product that we're happy to let our dog play with. The manufacturers, Aspen Pet Products, Inc., guarantee that they will replace this toy should it fail to meet their high standards, for whatever reason with proof of purchase.
The size we purchased is Large for dogs weighing 20-50 pounds. (Lulu weighs in right at 20 lbs.)
I wrote another review on the Booda Bimple Bone also made by Aspen Products.
