The Bottom Line:
I highly recommend the unit based on the taste of the coffee. It is delicious and quickly brewed.
The Bodum Electric Santos makes coffee in about half the time of an ordinary drip machine and yet the coffee tastes much better.
This coffee maker uses the vacuum method of coffee brewing. In the past this was method was limited to complex glass brewers that were used on the stove top and had to be closely watched and regulated to keep the temperature correct. Now, with the help of the Bodum Santos Electric, you can have this delicious coffee just as easily as you would from a drip machine.
The concept of a vacuum coffee maker is that coffee tastes best when the grounds are steeped like tea (as in a French Press) rather than passing hot water briefly over the grounds (as in a drip maker). To use the Bodum Santos you place your coffee grounds in the top and you water in the bottom. The system heats up the water and the steam that is created creates a vacuum which draws the hot water in to the top. After the prescribed time has passed the heating element shuts off and the water dramatically cascades through the permanent filter back to the bottom.
I don't know how to describe the coffee this unit makes. While it looks like it may have been underbrewed (light in color) the taste is just fabulous. For those of you that drink French Press coffee that's what this coffee tastes like. The coffee stays hot in the pot and doesn't really burn for the hour that the pot stays on. It can be a little bit of pain to reload the pot repeatedly if you have to make more than 12 cups.
Cleaning the unit can be a little cumbersome. The carafe gets rinsed like any other but the top brewing unit needs to be rinsed and then the permanent filter pulled out and cleaned as well. I also find that the plastic of the unit gets coffee oils adhered to it and as I clean the unit I find that I have to use a paper towel or sponge to wipe the interior out, rinsing alone doesn't work.
In any case, I can highly recommend the unit on the taste of the coffee alone. It is delicious and quickly brewed.
