We had a department disaster the other day when the decaffeinated pot quit working. At my place of work we always have 2 coffee pots running. One is for regular and the other is for decaffeinated. We had to have a replacement for the next day so it was off to the department store to get whatever value we could for our $20. We only charge $.25 a cup and use the profits for bagels or pizza once in a while. A major expenditure would be out of the question from our accumulated fund.
K-Mart Here We Come
The first pot we noticed was sitting out on one of the ?End Caps? with a sale price of $16.99. I must admit the price was within our budget so we were required to give it some thought. The model was the Black & Decker VersaBrew series DCM1200. I know that Black & Decker made fairly good tools and I also knew that they made some small household appliances so I shouldn't have been surprised to see the drip coffee maker. We purchased the machine and brought it to work the next morning for a quick cleaning and then we'd put it into service.
Setup and Use
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to setup a drip coffee maker. It only took a couple of minutes and we were ready to go (that is after we attached the filter basket which took 10 minutes). There is a pin on the top of the maker that you must align with a hole on top of the basket. You then have to align a pin on the bottom of the basket with a hole in the maker. It may sound simple but it wasn?t and took both hands to accomplish. After it is attached it swings in and out easily and stays in place when closed. The problems come when you try and place a filter in the basket or try to remove the basket for cleaning. The basket isn?t fully exposed so when putting in a filter it?s a little awkward but you can manage. Sometimes the filter tries to fold in at the sides and you have to straighten it out or get coffee grounds in your cup of coffee, YUK!
Cleaning
Cleanup is easy until you come again to the basket. As mentioned earlier, in this Epinion, it doesn't come out or go in easily. To clean it you need a dish brush because of the raised ribs in the bottom of the basket. Most of the other drip coffee makers I've used have these ribs, but the basket comes out or off easily and cleaning isn't such a tough task.
General Comments
The actual process of making coffee goes well and tastes good when finished. It makes up to 12 cups and the side water indicator is very helpful. Remember to take a few minutes and read the instructions that come with the unit, too. There aren't any surprises but it doesn't hurt to brush up on safety precautions.
Overall the maker is OK. I can't rave about the Black & Decker VersaBrew series DCM1200 like I would about the other one we have which is very ?User Friendly?. I just have problems with things that aren't simple to use and clean. We could have probably done better if we would have shopped around a bit more.
