Pros Yum to the taste, the look, and the overall feel.
Cons A bit clumsy on the design; not as convenient as an electric.
Recommended it? Yes

Honestly, I have to admit I put this item on my wedding registry on a whim. It's easy to get carried away with wedding registries... "Whee, isn't it fun to put things in your shopping bag that you may not need?"

That said, when my Bodum Santos coffee maker arrived several weeks ago I was... Read full review »

Pros This is an affordable way to brew great coffee
Cons It is very easy to break.
Recommended it? Yes

I will warn up front that this is a long review... I include instructions for quality brewing with this unit, which isn't easily done... I have been using these for 5 years so I feel it's helpful to pass on my tips to novices.

This is coffee enjoyment the way it's supposed to be. The... Read full review »

Yummy Joe, Crummy Design

Pros Makes a delicious brew rivaling restaurant coffee. Emits nice aroma.
Cons Too hard to remove laboratory-style glass funnel from pot. Too fragile for everyday use.
Recommended it? No

This is a vacuum coffee maker that you use over a gas flame or an electric element. My coffee never tasted like restaurant coffee, no matter what kind of grounds, brewer, filter or water I used. The Bodum Santos offered me hope that I might be able to obtain a good cup of java.

The design... Read full review »

Inconvenient but can make a superb cup

byknitsnbytes Jun 27, 2004

Pros Best cup of coffee ever.
Cons Fragile, inconvenient to use.
Recommended it? No

The Santos brewer is gentle on coffee beans. It works by a principle of physics-the expansion of water when heated, and the contraction when it cools. The pot consists of two round glass vessels, one a standard serving pot and one a chem-lab round vessel with a glass tube on the lower portion. A... Read full review »

Perfect coffee from imperfect coffee maker

byindyjones57 May 31, 2003
9 Helpfuls 10 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Outstanding flavor and aroma--far better than cone filters and percolators
Cons Fragile; weak handle could be dangerous; small capacity (8 c)
Recommended it? Yes

The Bodum Santos makes nearly perfect coffee. The combination of its glass bowls and filtering system lets through the coffee oils that give coffee its rich, deep flavor. Metals, plastic, and filters absorb oils and change flavors. The Bodum keeps the water temperature just below boiling, which is... Read full review »

Making Coffee with physics

Pros GREAT coffee, truly a experience that will make you stop drinking drip ever again.
Cons Something that shouldn't be rushed, gasket design a weak spot; top heavy
Recommended it? Yes

Truly something to watch. From the minute you open the box to the moment you drink the whole process is something to be enjoyed. Hand it to Germans to make a machine to get the purest taste. the taste is like the French press without the grounds or sludge you normally get....

Pros When you use fresh coffee beans, you get the best coffee imaginable.
Cons Just like other cooking, this is not "Plug and Play".
Recommended it? Yes

Well, I am now on my second Bodum Santos coffee maker.

How do I like it? I LOVE it.

To describe this coffee maker is a virtual impossibility,
it is just too cool looking. Sort of like an hourglass with
a larger upper half than the bottom, One of my friends suggested... Read full review »

Best coffee you can make

byheungbo Oct 26, 2009

Pros Great Design, Quality Construction
Cons Delicate
Recommended it? Yes

A little extra effort and care can make you a fantastic cup of coffee. Beautiful and exact design is not forgiving if you bang it around so be careful. Clean up is a bit easier if you don't wait too hours other wise coffee grounds turn to a good cement substitute. I start using hot water before I... Read full review »

Bodum Santos Stovetop Glass Vacuum 34-Ounce Coffee Maker

There is a good reason you can find a SANTOS coffeemaker in nearly every Scandinavian home, this vacuum brewing system has been fascinating coffee lovers for over sixty years. In the fifties, Peter Bodum, the father of today's owner, Jorgen Bodum, imported an French vacuum coffee maker and sold it on the Danish Market. Although he found it both unsatisfactory and expensive, he was convinced that the vacuum brewing system was an excellent way to brew an exquisite cup of coffee. Thus, the first Bodum Santos vacuum coffee maker was born. In collaboration with Danish designer Kaas Klaeson, Peter Bodum developed what we know today as the SANTOS, establishing the credo: ‘good design doesn’t have to be expensive’. The magic of the Santos holds both adults and children spellbound as they watch the boiling water rush from the bottom glass jug to the upper one where it gets mixed with freshly ground coffee. After a few minutes off the stovetop, a vacuum forms in the base which pulls rich black coffee through a filter and back into the bottom jug. This captivating process combines the ideal water temperature with just the right brewing time and makes for superb results. Whatever your preferred coffee and roast, the Santos vacuum system brings out the very best aromas in your cup.
