Boating 101

Pros Sound advice and educational materials
Cons High cover price; Little coverage of adventure boating
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a good magazine to read when you want to learn more about boats and their proper maintenance.
I like recreation in most any form and I try to seek out ways to enjoy a little leisure time every now and then when I am not performing one of my daily tasks. I like water recreation in a few forms and one publication that provides some good reading is Boating, a magazine about boats; how to take care of them and how to enjoy them.

Basic Contents of This Magazine:

With Boating, readers get about 110 to 140 pages of reading each month. The departments found in each issue include:

Rock the Boat- This includes comments and Q&A from readers, as well as corrections to the previous issue.

Making Waves- Anything newsworthy, quotable, or otherwise informative about boats and boating can be found here, along with an occasional comment/review about other products related in any way to boating.

Tow Test- Boats have to be towed and this department includes a quick summary of an SUV, pickup, or other vehicle powerful enough to pull a water vessel.

Gearhead- Gadgets, chemicals, and other things useful to boating enthusiasts can be found in this department.

Electronics Gear- A few specific electronics products are reviewed in this department, along with pros, cons, and final recommendation.

Shock- Less Therapy- This is a trouble shooting guide for correcting problems with boating equipment and electronic gear.

Weekend Workbook- This department describes a specific task for performing maintenance on a boat.

Short Casts- A quick rundown of fishing basics makes up the short articles in this department.

Red, Right, Return- The last page of each issue, this department offers a glimpse into the life of an ordinary Joe or Jane who makes a living or has a strong interest in the field of boating.

Boating also includes a few featured articles each month, like other magazines. It also includes special reports from experts in different areas of boating (like electronics, seamanship, repair, etc.) and several boating "Tests"- short commentary or reviews of different boats.

Cost to Subscribe:
Boating Magazine sells for the standard subscription price of $14 for twelve issues. This price means that each issue will cost you about $1.17, a very big savings of 76 percent off the cover price. Most web sites cannot beat a price like this. The publisher seems to be offering the best deal at this time.

Magazine Website/Customer Service:

The web site for this magazine is boatingmag.com. Archived articles, test results, and other sneak peaks can be found in the web site. There is even a forum and blog so that readers can share their thoughts on the magazine or boating in general. The customer service department can be reached by calling 212-767-6041.

Final Thoughts:

Boating is a very practical magazine about boats and their care. Issued monthly, this magazine concentrates on boating basics: Advising on the important things to look for in a boat, the proper maintenance and care, and the different ways to accessorize for maximum boating enjoyment.

I have been reading Boating for more than a year now and I like it a little better than most other boating publications. Many other boating magazines exist and I happen to read several of them each month. Each seems to have something to offer and they all offer some good, sound advice on boat ownership and care.

Boating, however, is probably the best in the bunch for education on the subject of Boating. In fact, I like to think of this magazine as Boating 101 because its primary goal is to inform. When it isn't testing a new boat and showing the reader the results, it is offering advice on a new gadget. When it isn't offering buying advice, it is helping with boat maintenance and general care. When it isn't offering handyman tips, it is offering advice on seamanship. This is Boating magazine in a nutshell. It wants those who own, operate, or ride as passengers in a boat to know everything there is to know about boats and their proper care.

Because Boating is geared toward education, there is little in this magazine in the way of adventure. That isn't to say there is no adventure- it just isn't as important in this magazine as education. Where the adventure reading comes into play is usually in one of the featured articles. But even the features tend to be more educational in nature, covering everything from the high price of fuel to advice on navigating small boats in a storm.

Overall, Boating is a very good magazine on this recreational subject and it makes a good supplement to other magazines about boating. I will continue to read other publications because I like the adventure articles. But when I am looking for the facts and want to learn more about boats, Boating Magazine is the publication I turn to. It contains everything you need to know about boats, from the initial purchase all the way to the maintenance and storage.
