You can be anything that you wanna be!

Pros Amusing to children, well rounded story.
Cons Well...Steve is kind of annoying, but that's just Steve :)

The Bottom Line:  Blue will have children--and parents--singing right along with her and the gang!
Blue's Clues is a children's show that airs on Nickelodeon each day, and has been around for quite some time. It's suited for children ages two through eight, and is immensely popular. Blue's Big Musical Movie is the first full-length film starring Blue, and was in theaters before coming out on video. I purchased it for my son after renting it and seeing how much he enjoyed it.

Is Blue's Clues Educational at all?

It is an educational show that allows preschoolers to learn by thinking. Throughout the movie, along with the story, Blue leaves three clues about who she wants her singing partner to be. The children, with Steve's help, figure out the three clues for the answer to the question.

In addition to learning by thinking, Blue's Clues gives preschoolers some very catchy music and lyrics that they can sing and dance to. The theme of the movie shows role-playing, which they can learn language skills and especially confidence.

The show and movie are set in such a way that Steve asks for help from the audience, to help figure out clues and other things. It gives children a chance to interact with the cast of characters, which is a treat for them!

The Cast of Characters

Steve is the only human being in the show, and he interacts with the others.
Blue is Steve's dog, and she leaves paw prints around which signify her clues.
Periwinkle is a cat that thinks the show is a magic show, and he wants to perform magic tricks.
Slippery is a bar of soap that has problems staying right side up. Everyone sings to him to get his confidence levels up.
Side Table Drawer is a small nightstand that is assigned every other job for the backyard show except the one she wants: singing.
G-Clef is a new character that helps Steve figure out the tune for the songs of the show.
Mailbox brings Steve letters in the show, and in the movie he has a comedy routine.

There are many other characters involved as well that put in cameo appearances, such as Snail, Tickety-Tock, Magenta, Green, and others.

Finally...the plot!

The general idea of this movie is that Steve and his friends are putting on a musical show in the back yard. The movie starts out by having Tickety Tock the alarm clock asking for "our" help in waking Steve, before he is late for preparing for the show.

Uh oh...

There are so many things to do! Where to begin! Steve is being slammed with questions about where to put this, that and the other thing. They don't have a stage yet, Tickety Tock has lost her voice! She was supposed to be Blue's singing partner. Who will be Blue's partner now?

Setting up the stage teaches children that coming together as a team helps things go a lot smoother, and that sharing helps too. Once the cast pulls together and shares their props, the stage is set: next, chaos!

Blue knows who she wants her singing partner to be, so she lays clues down for us to find for Steve. Once Steve finds the first clue, he gets his Handy-Dandy Notebook, in which he draws the first clue: his Handy Dandy Notebook.

Steve won't lose his mind, will he?

Everyone wants Steve's help, and this poor guy is run ragged by his friends. Periwinkle wants to show him a magic trick. Slippery is having problems rehearsing his number. Side Table is depressed because she does not have a part in the musical. Steve still needs to come up with a song of his own to sing in the musical, and the neighbors are coming already! Where's the food?

Another clue

The second clue that we point out to Steve is a knob. Steve draws it in his notebook, and moves on to help solve the next problem. He realizes, that after all this time, he has never found a clue all by himself! Therefore, it is his main goal in the movie to find a clue without anyone else's help. Poor Steve...everyone asks him if he's found the third clue yet. Time's running out, and no clue.

Poor Side Table Drawer...

Side Table is asked to take tickets, as the neighbors are arriving. She does, but she is so depressed that she decides to take off and hide. In another part of the back yard, Steve finds the third clue, after falling in a bunch of boxes. The clue is a drawer. He runs to the Thinking Chair, puts all the clues together, and comes up with Blue's new singing partner: Side Table Drawer!

It gets good now...

Periwinkle is still chasing Steve down to show the magic trick, but they discover that Side Table is missing in action! Everyone splits up and tries to find her. Periwinkle finds her, and yells for the others. When Steve tells her that she will finally have a part in the show, she is happy again, and the show begins!

The Show Begins!

Steve has his song; Blue has her singing partner; Mailbox is a hit (once he is unstuck by Steve); Slippery has an accident, but the crew comes in to get him going again; Periwinkle does his magic. The show, though short, is a hit. There is cheering and applause through most of it!

Mom2Daniel's Recommendation

It's a hit with my son and with me. I sat and watched it with him a few times, and it actually made me laugh in parts! I already know all the songs by heart, not that I was trying to learn them, and my son knows quite a bit of them as well. He always wants to watch Blue's Movie, as he calls it.

Blue's Big Musical Movie will be a favorite in this household for a long time! I hope it will become a favorite in yours as well!
