Blue's Big Musical Movie: A Must For Any Blue's Clues Fan

Pros Educational, Great Soundtrack, Lively and Fun
Cons Nada
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A treasure for any young Blue's Clues fan.
Blue?s Big Musical Movie is the first full-length movie based on the popular characters from Nickelodeon?s hit children?s show, Blue?s Clues.

The movie stars Steve (Burns), a human who lives in an animated world along with his dog, Blue. Keeping with the premise of the television show, Blue?s Big Musical Movie incorporates the familiar faces of their many animated friends; Slippery Soap, Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Tickety Tock, Shovel, Pail, Mailbox, Side Table Drawer, and its newest cast member, Periwinkle.

Periwinkle is the latest member in the Blue?s Clues lineup of child-like characters targeted for a predominately preschool aged audience. Periwinkle is a young kitten who has moved from the big city and now lives next door to Steve and Blue. A precocious and curious kitten, Periwinkle enjoys discovering new places and new things, making him a wonderful addition to the show.

Other characters making appearances throughout the movie include; Paprika, Green Puppy, Orange Kitten, Baby Bear, Magenta, Snail and Purple Kangaroo. There are even never before seen characters introduced, such as, G-Clef and the Notes. G-Clef is a hip, animated musical note voiced by Ray Charles, with his backup musicians The Persuasions featured as the Notes.

Backyard Musicals Rarely Come Together Without A Snafu or Two?

Steve, Blue, and all their friends are putting on a music show. But when the big day arrives to perform the show for an audience, one of the stars, Tickety, loses her voice and cannot sing a duet with Blue. Who will be Blue's singing partner now? Viewers are then asked to help solve ?Blue?s Clues? to discover whom her new singing partner will be.

But the adventures don?t end there! Steve has several chores to accomplish in preparation for the big show, Periwinkle attempts a magic trick, shy Side Table Drawer tries to work up the courage to ask Steve for a part in the show, Slippery Soap cannot seem to stay upright on the stage during rehearsal... And much more.

Steve also needs to come up with a song of his own to sing in the musical, with the viewer as his singing partner. And G-Clef and the Notes are more than willing to help out with an impromptu musical lesson of rhythm, tempo, and harmony. Soon a song is written, one that will later be sung at the musical show.

The interaction between Steve and the many animated characters is well done and very imaginative. And in typical Blue?s Clues style, Steve draws children into the adventure by speaking to the screen, creating an interactive experience for young viewers. The vibrant, primary colors of the scenery in the movie are the same as can be seen on the half-hour television show.

And the movie?s enchanting animation, fun story plot, lively tunes and interactive style are eye, ear and attention getters. Making Blue?s Big Musical Music a sure bet in keeping a toddler?s interest for a good portion, if not the entire, length of the feature. Both of my children, fifteen months and seven years, have sat through this feature in its entirety; more often than not, over the course of nearly six months.

Other times, they have simply gotten caught up in playing along or dancing to the music together, the movie soundtrack playing in the background. Either way, this in itself says much about the ?staying power? of this Blue?s Clues feature.

Musical Soundtrack

There are eighteen, be-boppin' tunes incorporated into the movie soundtrack, all of which are catchy and influential enough to get even Mom and Dad?s feet tapping in time. My littlest cherub loves music, and these fun and self-esteem-boosting lyrics are wonderfully designed to appeal to youngsters.

Simple enough to sing along to, the songs also carry positive messages of friendship, believing in oneself, never giving up, working together as a team, etc. An excerpt from, I Can Be Anything I Want To Be:

When something goes wrong
Don't give up
Just Go On

I can be anything that I want to be
I can do anything that I want to do
I don't give up

Educational Value

As preschoolers listen to Blue's Big Musical Movie soundtrack they will sing, dance, play, and learn that they can be anything they want to be!

Much like the television series, the interactive involvement this movie encourages helps to develop critical thinking, problem solving, confidence, and self-esteem through laughter. Preschool experiences and everyday real-life scenarios are themes used throughout the movie, which younger viewers can easily relate to.

Other developmental concepts promoted: thinking, language skills, listening and perceptual skills, social and emotional skills, motor skills, role-playing and drama, reading skills.

Overall Thoughts

The very first, full-length Blue?s Clues movie is a hit! Not only is Blue?s Big Musical Movie entertaining enough to hold my toddler?s interest throughout, but it is hard even for an adult not to sit and watch it over and over with the kids as well.

Yet what amazes me more is that, even after several months of its introduction, my seven year old still enjoys watching this with the little one on occasion. Albeit, with far less hip shaking, twirling, singing or ?discussion? in front of and at characters upon the television screen than that of her younger sister.

It?s seventy-eight minutes of an educational, fun-filled adventure with Steve, Blue and all of their friends well worth purchasing. We own the VHS version of this movie, however, it is also available on DVD.
