Kim Stanley Robinson - Blue Mars

The red planet is red no longer, as Mars has become a perfectly inhabitable world. But while Mars flourishes, Earth is threatened by overpopulation and ecological disaster. Soon people look to Mars as a refuge, initiating a possible interplanetary conflict, as well as political strife between the Reds, who wish to preserve the planet in its desert state, and the Green "terraformers". The ultimate fate of Earth, as well as the possibility of new explorations into the solar system, stand in the balance.

Pros The complex plot, interesting characters, well-described setting, the hard science aspect.
Cons Some will find this to be too quiet and too detailed.
Recommended it? Yes

When I finished reading Arthur C. Clarke's Rama series, I believed that I had just read the greatest science fiction series ever written. While that is still probably true, Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars is definitely a contender.

The series tells the... Read full review »

Pros 3rd book of a trilogy, you have to read it to get closure.
Cons It's just a Bad Book, maybe the author was sick of the characters by Book #3.
Recommended it? No

'Blue Mars', the third (and final) book of a trilogy, is, in comparison to the first 2 books, 'Red Mars' & 'Green Mars', a letdown. I raced through the first two books; the character development was excellent, and the characters were written in such a way that you cared about them, & what became of... Read full review »

Professional Reviews

New York Times Book Review: "Conceptually and stylistically, the Mars trilogy is mature science fiction, a landmark in the history of the genre. It requires close reading and amply rewards the effort. I trust it will not be long before some enterprising publisher hails a promising young author as 'the new Kim Stanley Robinson.'"
