Bless the Mild
Pros
Could be worse
Cons
theres a lot better (just not in the theaters right now, head to blockbuster)
Recommended it?
No
Sheesh I am racking my brain so hard to figure out what to talk about in this review...Bless the Child is one of those movies that you will leave with an indifference to it.
Was it a terrible beast of a movie? No. Was it enjoyable? No. And because of this...because a film is supposed to entertain you, and because this film will not, I cannot recommend this movie.
Sure there will be worse movies you can waste your money on, but if you pay attention to the early peeks at movies that I give, you should know which of those to avoid and which of those to see ;)...
The performances are just eeeeiiigghhhh*. I have a hard time cheering for Kim Basinger when she is running around trying to kick booty. I hate watching a main character who is weak and won't step up and just kick some tail. Basinger is a single mom taking care of her sisters baby. Her character is out of place in this whole ordeal, but she when she finally adjusts I dont buy it. I thought Carie Anne Moss from the Matrix would give this movie a great jump start. Nobody else is worth mentioning Christina Ricci, playing a heroin addict and former follower of "the bad guy's" cult, isn't bad but shes not in it enough to make a difference in this.
The film making isn't anything not worthy either. I could have kept the camera still and had the actors read the script as well. The CGI shots of a few demons are weak, they look like a low budget computer game. (note fixing things like these that I am nitpicking at may have pushed this movie over the hump).
Anyways as my mind is blank at this moment (I apologize for the rambling), I will just follow the guidelines that Epinions is suggesting to me at the top of this review entry screen:
Why did you see this movie?
Well given my normal taste for movies, and given what I generally enjoy, under normals circumstances I would not see this film. Next given that seeing the movie was in fact free, the movie is not out yet, my girlfriend is mad at me for taking her to The Cell last night (bleh), and my best friend just left for College...WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO!?!?! I could of course stay home and bask in boredom as I eagerly countdown the days till I leave for College? Or check out something I have no interest in at all, you be the judge...
Try not to summarize the plot; analyze it.
Ha, I would be happy. The movie is the story of a eerie young child with gifts (Hmmm, I think I already saw this movie and it was actually entertaining...Sixth Sense anyone?). The child is born on December, 16th 1993 a day where supposedly the North Star returns to the original spot it was in when the baby Jesus was born (thus giving the girl confusing powers, her relationship to God is never really explained...is she the second coming? Shes healing people...I mean WTF?). There is a strange cult who wish to tempt the girl much like Satan's temptation of Christ (They want to stop her from what? Were never told. What does this cult do? What are there motives...none of this is explored. We dont know anything about this cult except they are stupid...why should we care about them, or the movie for that matter). Have we heard this before? Yeah it steals from every God Vs. Satan movie of the past few years, which leads us to...
How does this movie compare to others you've seen?
Others I've seen, I guess were aiming at the recent Religion flick fads...lets see; Ninth Gate, Stigmata, End of Days, etc. were all dull and cliched, trying to come up with a original take on this type of film. Not much of Hollywood's recent mythological storylines work except in Dogma a film I find wonderful (A deeply pro Religious film which I think Bless the Child wanted to aim for). But Dogma is a comedy which would make it irrelevant to this topic.
Suggest similar movies you think others might enjoy.
Easiest topic yet...if there are any movies similar to this they are just eeeeiiigghhhh*.
Who would enjoy this movie?
Hmmmm, someone with a lot of time on there hands...wait I had a lot of time on my hands and I found this film a waste of my time...nevermind see something else...but not The Cell...
to sum all this mumbling up...the film is mild*...
seeing things first as usual...
