Pros Easy clean-up, reasonable price, ready light, attractive.
Cons Takes 5 min each
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I like the higher waffles and Teflon makes cleanup a snap! The chrome waffle iron is attractive and may be stored upright.
Fresh, warm, crisp and golden waffles are easy to share with your beloved on the morning after!

My hubby and I had a craving for waffles, so I did what women do best - went shopping! I looked at the various brand names and after several stores, I selected the Black & Decker at Wal-Mart for the following reasons.

Why Black & Decker Belgian Waffle Maker WMB500

* Ease of clean up.
* Makes the higher type, Belgian waffle
* Price was reasonable - $19.96
* Light alerts when waffles are done.
* Attractive round Chrome exterior.
* The iron can be stored upright.

Webster defines a waffle iron as a cooking utensil having two hinged metal parts that shut upon each other and impress surface projections on waffles that are being cooked.

Belgian Waffles are "fatter" and higher than regular breakfast waffles. That means that the Black and Decker provides more room for the waffle to raise. If you prefer smaller, skinnier waffles --- this may not be the waffle iron for you! Unlike other irons, the light will indicate when the waffle is done. The waffles easily break apart into four pieces. If you are serving a crowd --- you may have to make the waffles and move them to a warming oven. Each waffle takes about 5 minutes.

The following recipe is included with the Black & Decker and makes great waffles! You may also use regular pancake mixes. I prefer to eat them with powdered sugar and my hubby likes them with warm maple syrup and butter. They are also great with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

CRISP & GOLDEN WAFFLES

1 egg 3 tablespoons sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour 3 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups milk 1 teaspoon vanilla

In medium bowl, beat egg until frothy. Add remaining ingredients; mix until smooth. Add 2/3 cup batter to pre-heated Waffle Maker and spread evenly with rubber spatula. Close unit and bake until light goes out. Carefully remove waffle (lightly re-oil if sticking occurs.) Repeat with remaining batter. Yield: 4 waffles

A Few Facts to Remember
1. Preheat the unit for approximately 5 minutes while you mix the batter.

2. When the light goes on, pour about 2/3 cup of batter on the lower surface and spread it across towards the edges.

3. Gently close the top. Steam will escape while cooking, so keep your hands away.

4. Ready Light goes out when the waffle is done. Longer cooking means a crisper waffle. Remove the waffle with a fork and keep the cover closed to preserve the heat.

5. Re-oil the non-stick finish should any sticking occur.

6. Clean up by wiping the surface with a damp sponge or cloth after the iron is unplugged and cool.

7. Waffles freeze well, but place paper towels between them before wrapping in plastic.

Additional Details

* The round 7 1/2" diameter non-stick cooking surface is divided into four sections. This causes the waffle to easily break apart for serving.

* The handles are heat resistant and the ready light signals when preheated/waffle is done.

* The cord wrap and storage stand makes storing convenient.

* The Black & Decker WMB500 comes with a Full One-Year Warranty. No maintenance or service to this appliance is required other than cleaning with a sponge or damp towel.

* The hinge is designed to be loose to allow the waffle to rise evenly and for steam to escape.
