Your Best Cup of Coffee Awaits

Pros Cool look, best coffee you can make
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes
No coffee lover should be without a french press. For rich taste and body, nothing beats a ?pressed? cup of coffee.

The beauty of a french press is its simplicity. Good ground coffee, near-boiling water, a stir with a wooden spoon and five minutes later you?re pouring the best cup of java you can have. Bodum makes a wide variety of french presses, but I like the Eileen because of its unique look. Bodum seems to specialize in classy designs that are simple yet functional. The Eileen French Press never fails to garner compliments from visitors.

I like a little ceremony around my coffee routine: I use only quality espresso beans, a beautiful stainless steel teapot that was a gift from my boyfriend to boil the water and a good cup and saucer (made in France) from a set I bought in L.A.. Buy good beans (the darker roast the better in my book) and grind them just before you?re ready to brew. French presses want a coarsely-ground bean, so go easy on that ?grind? button.

Sometimes I find it hard to ?press? the plunger into the pot after the brew time has passed. Usually I can remove the entire plunger and start over. I think this is a simple problem: either I?ve inserted the plunger in a slightly crooked position and it doesn?t want to go down or I?ve ground the coffee for too long and it has clogged the filter. If this happens to you, don?t force it; you may bend the plunger rod or worse, cause scalding hot water to shoot out of the pot.

I have traveled with my french press and as long as you pack it well (the beaker is made of fragile-looking glass although it has held up well so far) you can enjoy fresh-pressed coffee anywhere. I have even seen Bodum plastic french presses specifically for the traveler (but that?s another epinion, isn?t it).

A french press makes a unique and cost-effective gift, especially for those who appreciate a good cup of coffee. The Eileen put me back $40, but you can find a less ?designed? Bodum french press for $20. I have given french presses as wedding gifts and they are always appreciated as a unique addition to a couple?s kitchen. A french press also makes a great gift for the lover of all things European. There is nothing like a good strong cup of coffee to take you back to that little Parisian cafe where you enjoyed coffee and croissants on a European vacation.
