The Bottom Line:
Purchase this product if you love soft serve and don't live close to DQ.
I saw the Black & Decker Arctic Twister at Sears about four years ago and was intrigued. At the time I did not purchase it. After a little research, I decided to give it a try. I purchased it for about $20 on Ebay.
I agree with the previous reviews on one point: You need to use a good bit of ice cream (probably twice as much) to get a waffle cone full or to fill a sundae cup. It is loud. However, it is not difficult to clean.
The end result is really delicious soft serve ice cream. The Arctic Twister brings out the mellow flavors and accentuates flavors sometimes lost when you serve ice cream right out of the freezer. Letting ice cream soften on the counter before serving also sets off the flavor, but the Arctic Twister takes it a step beyond.
I bought this item with the intention of making low fat ice cream palatable to help me diet. It accomplishes that task beautifully.
It also makes grocery store brand ice cream stand out.
Several scoop shop owners have commented that they don't carry soft serve ice cream because of the waste and inconsistency of flavors. Dairy Queen vanilla ranges from bland to delicious mainly depending on the vanilla flavoring and varies from location to location. With the Arctic Twister you can guarantee the results by choosing a product you like and turning your kitchen into a temporary DQ.
Arctic Twister will satisfy hard core softer servers like myself. Where I live in Houston, the closest soft serve is about five miles away. Oh, by the way, I am not counting the product McDonald's calls low fat ice cream.
