The Bottom Line:
This is the best waffle maker out there that I could find --and I tried a few.
I had a previous version of this waffle maker for 15 years, and finally it needed to be replaced. I bought two other waffle irons and was greatly disappointed in their performance. The Black & Decker hasn't changed much at all -the new model is almost identical to the old one. But it is the only waffle maker I found that makes excellent waffles and is easy to clean. The waffles are not "Belgian style" in that they are less thick, but they taste great. And they never stick to the grids when you follow the easy directions.
It has a chrome surface, so you need to avoid touching the chrome portions of the top, but the handles are large and easy to use to open and close the grill. Like any hot appliance such as an iron, you need to be careful, especially if you have little kids.
The dimensions are 9" x 9"x 3.5" , so it stores pretty easily.
It has a very easy to use "ready" light to tell you when to pour the batter in and when to take the cooked waffles out.Foolproof! It does take 5 minutes or so to warm up for the first batch of waffles, but that gives you time to get the batter ready. The waffles are done in about another 5 minutes. Subsequent batches cook a little faster. You can make them crisper by adjusting the dial to your liking. Addendum: One thing I have noticed after using this waffle iron for several months now is that the first batch of waffles comes off beautifully and evenly brown, but later batches made at the same time, while still tasty, tend not to brown as evenly. For that reason I'm lowering my rating to four stars from five stars.
To use this appliance as a griddle, you just reverse the grids and you have two smooth surfaces to work on. It makes great grilled cheese. You can grill either open or closed. Honestly though, I just use it for waffles.
To clean the grids, you merely press lightly on the clip holding them onto the waffle maker, lift them up and wash them in the sink. You do need to wait about 5-10 minutes for the grids to cool down or use a glove to lift them up if you are in a hurry. The clips hold the grids on securely but are easy to remove and replace. You replace them by simply lifting the clip a little and releasing it so they attach onto the grids, holding them in.
