The Bottom Line:
Maybe your experience will be different. It would still be on my countertop if it hadn't died so quickly
After spending a week on the web researching toaster ovens I ventured out to the local strip mall to get up close and personal with these models so that I could finally replace the beat up and impossible to clean beast on my countertop. It's not hard to spend big bucks ($100-$200) if you want and so after 20 minutes of fiddling with the display models I was pleased to find this B&D unit. I have a lot of B&D tools & other products so I am inclined to trust this company for good design at a decent price and at $70 on sale the TRO390 seemed to fit the bill. The design is relatively compact with a combination black plastic and stainless steel exterior. Inside the cooking cavity was of decent size (ample 4 slice size) with perforated covers over the heating rods. The controls take a bit of getting used to as you have to manipulate more than 1 dial to get it to do some things. It also has a separate switch for the convection feature which could be used with baking or toasting. The nice blue run light is easily visible and the end of cycle bell was just loud enough. All was well until about a month later when the convection fan started to make unusual noises. It didn't seem to affect the performance. The noise sometimes went away only to return later. Then the oven feature stared to malfunction. First it seemed to take forever to preheat and then it started to shut down even the timer was still running. Soon it just stopped baking altogether although the toast cycle seemed to be fine. Then a day later that went to. Nothing - no heat in any mode and so back to the store it went for a refund.
