Toaster Oven For Tough Times

Pros Nice and inexpensive.
Cons Not good for broiling so much.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Wonderful for those on a budget with limited space and time.  It is attactive and easy to use.
This review of the Black and Decker Toaster Oven was meant to be written before the holidays, but I was too busy baking with it.  My purchase of this toaster from Walmart on sale for $43 was out of necessity - the regular oven in my rental was not trustworthy and someone had given me a turkey for Thanksgiving.  It took awhile to get how to operate it properly, but once you get the hang of it, the rewards are about on par with what you would expect from any microwave.

This counter-top convection oven is black and stainless steel with a extra deep interior and modern styling.  It has a 3-prong grounded electrical cord for safety as well as a tamper-proof screw in the back to prevent outer cover removal for amateur repairs.  Although parts are easy to come by from customer service at 1-800-231-9786, they would prefer you not attempt to muck around with it yourselves.

The little power light at the top right-hand corner is blue and makes me think especially fondly of KMart where items like this are usually purchased.  There is a 60-minute timer dial which you will need to read the instructions to understand how to operate properly because in order to get it going you have to turn the dial past 20 minutes and then back to where you want it to get it clicking.  A little bell will ring when the timer has run out as well - this can be annoying or a help depending upon your outlook.  The timer also has a "Stay On" function for warming.

The temperature control dial is pretty simple but understand that toaster and convection ovens cook quickly and hot - very hot - so you will need to keep it lower than usual for baked goods and pies so they cook evenly through the middle and do not brown too much on top.  Patience is a virtue but it does take half the time anyway.  You get Keep Warm, Conv Bake, Broil and Toast for choices.  Watch for the end of the dial which is Broil/Toast because your choices will matter.

There are two slide racks and mine came with a tiny bake pan.  There is a very nice removable crumb tray.  WARNING:  This oven is hot-hot-hot so you must wait until it cools thoroughly before cleaning inside or removing the crumb tray at the bottom of the oven.

The door handle is stainless steel and on the top front which is sturdy and out of the way for viewing through the nice glass door.  This model and the TRO4070B have an extra deep interior which means that those little 12 inch personal pizzas and small fruit pies can fit inside of it.

The broiler was too slow and a microwave might be better for meats, unless you are broiling smaller pieces or doing tater tots and other things which a microwave simply cannot crisp so deliciously.

I would suggest every home have a toaster oven now.  It may take a lot of electrical juice but only for short periods of time.  It toasts on BOTH sides of the bread evenly and nicely and pie bottoms which are normally gooey are firm.  My little pan cakes come out nicely browned all the way around and biscuits are superb.
