Handy Little Sucker

Pros Lightweight, Small and Powerful
Cons Awkward to Empty
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Highly Recommended: Cheap, lightweight, convenient and easy to use.
The Black & Decker Handheld Wet/Dry Vacuum is one of the best and most convenient little appliances I’ve picked up in a long time. It always seemed like such an irritation before when you had to pull out the vacuum cleaner just to take care of a little spill. Now this little handheld device just sits on my kitchen counter ready to run at a moment’s notice.

I didn’t put much thought into the brand I wanted to buy. This wasn’t a planned purchase at all. I saw it at Target for $19.99, thought it was a cool idea and went ahead and bought it. I figured it would be good for the kitchen and good for the car. It’s turned out to be much handier than I envisaged.

The Black & Decker Cordless Dust Buster is only about 15 inches long and weighs a mere 2 lbs. It has a 7.2 Volt motor and is capable of picking up both wet and dry messes. The base sits on the counter and the vacuum itself detaches easily. It has a front bin that you can twist off to empty. Mine came with a 2 year warranty.

Putting it to the test

The Dust Buster sits on my kitchen counter when not in use, and takes up very little space. It does come with a wall attachment if preferred. I understand that the charge is very short, but have never had a problem with this since I’ve only ever used it for quick jobs.

It has a very powerful motor and great pick up. Its power does create quite a bit of noise. I frequently use it on spills, broken glass and dog hair and love the way it goes to work. The tapered design is perfect for getting into tight spaces and corners. I like to use it for getting under my TV cabinet, around skirting boards and inside the car. It’s design and power means that you don’t have to do too much furniture moving. As for liquid spills, it works perfectly well as promised too.

Emptying is relatively simple; you just twist off the front nozzle, remove the sponge filter and discard the waste into the trash. There’s no bag, the waste just sits in the nose. Emptying can be a little awkward as dust gets stuck in the sides and I usually have to stick my hand in to loosen it. It just slots back into place again, although my clumsy hands sometimes need to fiddle with it a little before getting it to slot back into place. This whole process takes less than a minute.

Cleaning it is really simple too. Since the nozzle is the only part that gets dirty, you can simply remove it and wash it in the sink. The vacuum is intended for sucking up spills so you don’t even need to dry it before you use it again.

Verdict

This is an excellent little cordless cleaner. It works great on the little jobs it’s intended for. For such a small device it’s pretty powerful, while the size and design are especially handy. This is a great little gadget to have in the kitchen or for small apartments. I can see it being perfect for many purposes, from bachelor’s who don’t care to vacuum too often or restaurants that have to pick up spills in a flash. At around $20 it’s definitely a nice little investment.
