The Bottom Line:
If you need a toaster and you see this on the shelf at Walmart, buy it, its a good buy.
Our toaster oven died on us, and it was a pain to use anyways so we decided to go back to using a plain old toaster to get the job done. Off to Walmart to buy a toaster. Seriously do we have a choice anymore for small appliances, pretty much the only 2 stores around here you can get something like a toaster in are Walmart and Target. The rest of the stores just don't bother carrying small appliances.
Walmart offers several choices for toasters, even in a relatively small Walmart store. We didn't need a 4 slice toaster so that was out. There is even a 2-slice toaster for 6$. We didn't want to buy the ultra cheap one and then just have it break on us in a month or maybe not even work right out of the box. So we went with this wonderful Black and Decker 2-slice toaster. This is a simple toaster and it does the job so I don't have that much to say about it.
This model comes in black or white and I would suggest buying the black over the white because I have heard that anything that is white plastic is more likely to develop cracks over time due to the composition of white plastic.
It does smell when you first plug it in and use it but that smell will be gone after you use it 3-4 times, anything that is new out of the box will smell like this though.
First you set the temperature, I would recommend setting it on 3 or 4 to start, 3 if you like white toast, 4 if you want more typical toast. The other settings are far too light, but they might be good for a Pop Tart or something like that. The guides inside the toaster will automatically adjust for whatever you put in it.
After you put the bread in you have the choice of pressing a couple buttons on the outside, these are lit up by LED lights when pressed. If you put a bagel in you will definitely want to use the bagel setting. I have toasted bagels in this and I can say it will hold even the largest bagel you can find in the store, the slots are that big. When you toast a bagel after cutting it you want to put the open side towards the middle of the toaster for both halves. There is also a frozen setting, which I have not tried yet, as I usually warm up my bagel in the microwave before toasting it. There is a cancel button as well, if you want to get your stuff out of the toaster before its done, or if you like things toasted very light.
The crumb tray is a breeze to clean, and you no longer have to turn the toaster upside down to clean it out. You cannot wash the crumb tray in the dishwasher though.
Compared to an old faulty toaster oven, this toaster is great. Sure you pay a little more but at least you get wider slots and a couple extra features. Plus it works which is exactly what you want a toaster to do, you just want it to work.
