Give your lawn a clean, professionally manicured appearance.

Pros Ease-of-use; lightweight; comparatively low noise levels; price.
Cons Not as powerful as most gas edgers.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I definitely recommend this edger for light to moderate residential use. Easy to use, and provides excellent results at a reasonable price.
When we purchased our house, it was apparent that the sidewalk edges had not been maintained in some time. Rather than hire a professional landscaping service to clean things up, I decided this was a project I could tackle myself. I had first tried a few different manual edging tools, and soon became frustrated with the difficulty and poor results. I was aware of the Black & Decker Edge Hog, and decided to give it a try.

I purchased the edger from Amazon for $79.99. The unit weighs about 12.5 lbs., and is approximately 4 ft. long, making it easy enough to use for men and women of nearly any stature. A 2-year warranty covers any manufacturer's defects.

After two years of use, I can report that I have been very happy with my purchase of the Edge Hog. It helped me to clean up the long ignored sidewalk and driveway edges, and continues to help maintain a clean, professionally manicured appearance.

Operation of the unit is very simple. Just press the trigger to spin the cutting blade. Release the trigger to stop the blade immediately; this safety feature is very important to me with having several children and pets in the neighborhood.

The hard steel cutting blade features an aggressive serrated cutting edge, and does a fine job of cleanly slicing through the turf. After roughly 10 uses in 2 seasons, the blade shows very little wear. Replacement blades (if needed due to wear or breakage) are readily available for around $8.

The cutting head features three adjustable height/depth positions. I generally use it at the deepest setting for most jobs for longer lasting results. A door on the blade guard swings open for easy cleaning when needed. I have found this particularly useful in damp soil conditions, as mud can accumulate around the blade, hampering its performance.

The edge guide can also be pulled up to convert the edger to a trenching tool. While the resulting trench is narrow, this capability is helpful for installing flower bed edging or wiring for "invisible" dog fencing. I have also recently used the trenching feature to recreate the border between my garden and lawn after years of overgrowth.

Being an electric unit, the noise lever is very low compared to gas-powered units, and much less expensive to operate. As expected, this 11-amp, 2.25hp electric edger is not as quick or powerful as most gas edgers, but it has plenty of torque and speed to clean up moderately overgrown edges in a reasonable time. Severely overgrown edges would be better served with a larger commercial-grade gas edger.

Obviously, the electric nature of this product requires the use of a long extension cord. Thankfully I have nearby outlet access on the house, so a 100' cord is more than sufficient for my needs. I have found the need for a cord to be only a slight inconvenience. From my experience, the benefits of not having to deal with gas and oil (continually rising cost, mixing, storage) outweigh this minor issue.

This product has served my residential lawn edging needs very well. I recommend this product to other homeowners due to its reasonable price, ease-of-use, and impressive results.
