Beautiful Lawn Starts with Clean Edges

Pros Works extremely well
Cons Range is limited by the length of extension cord
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Very easy to use and it works extremely well.
I stayed away from another garden power tool as long as I could. Manual tools, no matter how pre-historic they are, were my idea of gardening tools. I even bought a reelmower!

My recent move to Upstate South Carolina got me to deal with hard-as-rock clay soil that was simply impossible to penetrate using my old manual edger unless the soil was pre-soaked with plenty of water. After fighting with my manual edging tool without making much progress throughout most of the summer, I finally decided to get myself a power edger. My limited projected hours of usage made me decide to go with an electric model since I figured gas powered edgers could pose storage and maintenance problems. Actually I have been looking for one since last summer, so I knew exactly which one to get when the time came.

Out of the box, the only thing I had to do was connect the handle extension, and this was accomplished even without looking at the manual. The rest was also self explanatory and skimming through the manual just to be sure, was all that was necessary to start using this tool.

The unit does not come with an extension cord, but it accepts the standard heavy-duty (14 gauge) household extension cord. I had to use three of them together to reach the far end of the garden...therefore, it might be adviseable to measure the longest distance of the area from your receptacle prior to bring home this edger.

It worked so effortlessly through the hard soil, I was simply amazed. What started out as a test-cut upon returning from the store in the middle of the day turned into a full blown "edging" operation in the 90 deg weather. I just could not stop as it cut through old overgrown grass and hard soil. If using my manual edger was like cutting a 2x4 with a kitchen knife, using this power edger was like using a circular saw to cut the same 2x4. Matter of fact, it is nothing more than a circular saw with a long handle plus wheels.

It has three adjustable depth settings. 1, 1.25, and 1.5 inches. Deeper the cut, a little harder to make a pass. Another setting, thus calling this tool "2 in 1", is a trenching. Trenching setting allows the tool to cut probably about 2 inches deep, and it was even more difficult to cut through hard soil, but it worked!

The noise it makes did not bother me at all. In fact, there was no need for ear plugs when using the tool. Eye protection is a good common sense when using a tool such as this, but all debris get kicked towards the front, and it is highly unlikely anything would ever reach your own face unless there is strong head winds. The most common complaints using an electric power tool is the hassle of using the long cord. Even then, the long extension cord did not really bother me as the operation was in one direction until reaching the end of pavement. Besides, you walk slow throughout the cutting operation. I've never thought it was this simple to make my garden looking professional!
