The Bottom Line:
A worthy investment that will yeild a well manicured lawn. A must if you are selling your home.
My retired neighbor would edge my lawn from time to time and it looked amazing. Once you see how nice your lawn looks when groomed by an edger, you will want to maintain that look! I have approx. 400 linear feet to edge and probably could have used a gas powered edger. I chose this black and decker because of price, small footprint and not having to maintain another motor.
If you have not edged your lawn in over a year, use a string trimmer to clear most of the growth. This will make it a lot easier when you use your edger. When I bought this unit, I purchased an extra blade expecting to tear one up while I got the hand of it. To my surprise, the first blade lasted three seasons. You will want to replace the blade when you no longer have that nice finished look. When the blade wears, it actually gets shorter, so sharpening it will not help at all. There is almost no learning curve to this machine, and the more you use it the easier it will be.
If you go several mowings without edging, you will increase the difficulty when you finally do get around to it. Not to worry, this edger can handle it. In my four years of use, I could have sworn that I was going to destroy my motor several times. It will sputter when trying to plow through thick grass rooted in moist soil. Happy to say, this machine runs as good as the day I bought it.
When the soil is moist, it will clump up inside the unit. You simply open the latched door and scoop out the mud. This can be pretty annoying, so time your edging when your soil is dry. After edging, use an electric blower (since you already have an extension cord out) to gather up debris. On thing you will notice is that there is no brake on the blade. It will spin for a few seconds after you release the button. I am impatient and will just set it down on the grass to stop the spinning.
There is no maintenance to this unit and it is well constructed. After four years, I think I have gotten my money's worth. If you are selling a home, an edged lawn is an absolute must!
