Decker Black And Decker PS1MVC 8.4 Volt To 14.4 Volt 1 Hour Pod Style Battery Charger
EASE OF USE: Very easy.
Just plug in, drop in the batter to be charged (8.4 to 14.4 volt only and only, apparently Black and Decker brand batteries. A red LED light on the front of the unit, will flash different patterns to alert you if the charge is done, in progress, or if there's a problem and you should unplug the unit.
DURABILITY:
Compared to the thin, light, and easily broken charger that came as part of my original Black & Decker drill set (see Expense below!) this unit is very sturdy and durable. The plastic is a thicker, denser substance that feels like it could take some good strong falls and kicks around the workshop. I didn't test this out to thoroughly yet, but after a few months of wear, my PS1MVC still has a nice new look to it.
EXPENSE: Fair. After searching online, my local hardware Big Box had a sale that included all power tools and accessories, so I was able to get it for $39.99. Not a terrible deal, but there certainly is a bit of a sucker feeling for this one. Brand new "Black and Decker" power drills can range as low as $99 - so it's a bit hard to justify the outlay of 40% that just for a charger. Plus, if "Black & Decker" would just incorporate a higher quality charger that comes with all power tool sets, well, then I'd still have $40 and Black & Decker shareholders would have a smaller earnings statement for the year.
The original charger died after two years, of pretty light use and no abuse. Indeed, I was surprised that the charger can complete a full charge in less than one hour. I had one battery that hadn't been charge in at least six months, and was fully dead. I thought for sure that it would take an overnight charge for the battery to be fully juiced up. Well, I was wrong. The PS1MVC by Black & Decker worked in one hour.
RECOMMEND:
Yes. A must have for work crews or just weekend warriors who are forgetful and don't pre-charge their batteries before starting on a project. Instead of waiting overnight or for 6-10 hours, the PS1MVC has you up and using your power tools in no time.
