Very disappointing

Pros Cheap
Cons bulky, uneven baking, poor design lid
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Don't waste your money, pay more and get a more durable machine. Plastic is not the best material for something designed to bake!
After 8 wonderful years of service my Citizen breadmaker was beginning to look like it needed replacing.

Canadian Tire had this model on offer Boxing Week and I got it for a great price of $49.95 which unfortunately is the only great thing about it!

It is a 2-3lb model so is really quite large and takes up more than it's fair share of my worktop space, but it seemed such a great bargain I decided to put up with it. I only planned to make 2lb loaves as 3lb is way too much for just two os us.

After 8 years of really successful wholewheat bread I was quite shocked to find that my favourite 2lb recipe was a disaster in this machine. I had just a little 'door stop' in the middle of the bottom of the pan! However, after adjusting my recipe up by 50% I got an acceptable, if not very doughy, loaf.

After only 4 or 5 more loaves the lid will now not stay in shape despite many pushes back in place) and the plastic keeps warping and then a fairly substantial crack appears on the right front corner of the lid allowing the hot air out and presumably the cold air in. The result is an uneven loaf which doesn't rise or cook properly on one side. Plus the ugly brown watery stain that runs down the front where steam eminates from the gap in the lid.

I have just retrieved the box, packing and receipt from my basement and am returning the machine tomorrow.

I've fetched my old Citizen back out of the basement, cleaned it off and I hear it reliably chugging away in the kitchen right now. I can't wait for a lovely light and tasty loaf in the next couple of hours time!

Sorry Black & Decker, with this quality of appliance I'm not converted to your brand yet. Now if you would like to go back to a good old reliable METAL casing, we may have a whole different story to tell.
