The Bottom Line:
Black and Decker dropped the ball on this one.
I bought this as a gift for our family. At first we made a few mistakes common to first time breadmaker users. Once we got things figured out, we began to enjoy some wonderful bread. However, our frustration began to grow as we experienced a very hit and miss success rate. Some loaves were very poorly mixed, with lumps and pockets of flour. We discovered the reason was that one of the paddles was falling off during the mixing. The paddles would also "rise" right off the posts during the resting cycle. The inside of the pan became badly scratched due to the fact that one of the paddles was often falling off and getting kneaded into the dough. The last straw was when the split ring fell off the bottom of one of the paddle drive shafts, causing the gear to get bent up. This was now a warranty issue because we had been toughing it out for over a month and were well past the store's own satisfaction guarantee date. Lucky for us, the department manager took pity on us and took back the bread maker in exchange for a gift card.
A few more complaints;
-The crust settings are either too light or rock hard.
-The machine produces loud beeps which can't be turned off.(Forcing you to choose between fresh bread in the morning or a good night's sleep.)
-The larger loaf size results in a taller loaf, slices of which, won't fit sandwich bags or toasters.
