What Is This Stuff For?

Pros Fits specialty Black and Decker sanders.
Cons Middle of the road quality and capability
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It is good that Black and Decker makes sandpaper for their specialty sanders and makes it widely available - at a price.
It looks a little like a caricature of a mouse. The main part of it could fit on the foot of an iron. It has holes that don't seem to make much sense. But if you are the owner of one of the larger mice from Black and Decker you will recognize it right away. This is a pack of sandpaper that is purpose made to use with the larger Black and Decker Mouse sanders. I use it with my Cyclone sander in its finishing mode with the iron looking pad on it. It also fits several others of these handy sanders like the Mega Mouse and their Firestorm brand cordless mouse. I have even cut out a piece of hardboard to its shape and attached Velcro to it for use as a hand detail sander.

Black & Decker Mega Mouse Paper Coarse

This is a dry hook-and-loop backed sandpaper product cut to fit the platen of the larger Black and Decker and Firestorm sanders with a platen shaped like an iron. It has some tips which can be torn off and fit on an extension that can be bolted to the end of the platen for getting into very small places like the overlapping parts of shutters. These tips can also be used to replace the tip on the main platen without having to change all the paper. The tip wears fastest and this is a nice touch. This paper has a coarse grit, 80 grit to be more exact. This sandpaper also comes in a medium grit (120) and a fine grit (220). You can also sometimes find packs of assorted grits in some of the better stocked stores or on line. It has holes which match those on the platen to allow dust pickup while sanding. They match well.

The sanding action is not very aggressive in these low priced finishing sanders and so a coarser grit is necessary to get rapid stock or paint removal. The grit is aluminum oxide which has a good balance between good abrasive action and long life. It doesn't say on the package, but the grit seems to be applied in an open coat which reduces the tendency to clog. Whether it has a lubricant to further help is debatable.

I use this grit when sanding off paint or to get a surface even quickly where a detail finish sander makes sense. It leaves some fairly aggressive scratches and requires some work with finer grits before any surface is ready for a finish. Although I have used it to knock paint off metal, the scratching may make it unsuitable for this.

If you have one of the sanders with this footprint, using this sandpaper is about your only choice. I have on occasion used hook-and-loop sheets of sandpaper cut out to fit the platen, but that limits the value of any dust collection capability the tool may have. It doesn't wear too quickly on bare wood but does clog pretty fast when using it for finish removal. There are twice as many pieces of detail paper available as the larger iron shaped parts and this is good because I find those pieces wear quickly and tear more easily in the tight places where they are most likely to be used.

It doesn't make much sense to say whether this paper is better than others since it is about the only choice if you have one of these sanders.
