The Bottom Line:
Wake up to fresh coffee every morning with this programmable coffee maker. Simple to use & clean. Great coffee every time!
Beep, Beep, Beep.... Oh gosh, it's not time to get up already is it? Oh yuck! Pitter pattering down the hall I hear our youngest son :ahhh: now he is jumping up on the bed with a big smile. So happy to greet the new day. I wish I had his enthusiasm. I do not. I am not a morning person. "Morning punk" I say as he crashes down upon me with a morning kiss and big squeeze. Somehow children know how to put a smile on your face...
sniff,sniff
"Mmmmmm - Coffee!". All ready and waiting to be poured into my cup. At this moment I think perhaps just down my throat?)
It is not easy getting up in the morning. I am a night owl. I love to stay up late. Some parents stay up late to have quiet time. I have always done this. When I was younger I thought nothing of staying out until 4:00am. Reading until 2 or 3 am was never a problem either. At this point in my life, my husband works night shift, 7:00pm-7:00am. On the weekends I often stay up until 2:00 with him. During the work week I often find myself working on the computer until midnight. Thus, getting up in the morning is difficult for me - and the reason for my review of the Black and Decker Under the Counter Coffee Pot.
This past winter our old Proctor Silex Coffee Pot ceased to operate. My husband went shopping for a new coffee pot. He did this because I like to buy everything I can on sale. I would wait two weeks and go to Dunkin' Donuts on the way to work - :chuckle: - So much for sale prices.
He came back with this Black and Decker 12 Cup Automatic Coffee Maker. "Geez, it's kind of expensive" I say. He gives me one of those looks that say it's worth it. You see my husband is wise. He knows you never have enough counter space in the kitchen. He knows we have had many items manufactured by Black & Decker (we had one of their first Space Maker Coffee Pots). He also knows I like to wake up to coffee in the morning.
Installation was very easy. My husband did it. :chuckle: OK, I did tell him where I wanted it and I watched. In the box you will find a template to help you see where to drill the holes for the screws that you will attach the coffee maker holder to.
The only thing that I did not care for is this model does not rest flush against the face of the cabinet, it juts out just enough to be annoying and in the way of using the cabinets. Not so much so that I would do without.
This coffee maker says it is a twelve cup. I wish manufacturers would tell us how many mugs of coffee it will fill - not how many tea cups. If you are a coffee lover then you know when they advertise twelve cups you will end up with closer to eight or nine.
The water reservoir is easily removed for filling with water. You fill to the line of how many cups you have chosen to make, and place it back in it's spot on the coffee maker. The reservoir comes in two pieces for easy cleaning.
Since we always seem to have coffee left in the pot, I rinse it out and set it on the counter, dump out the grounds from the little drip basket, rinse that then set it on top of the coffee pot. This way I don't get little wet coffee drips on the counter while filling the drip basket with a filter and scoops of coffee.
Place the filter basket and coffee pot in their spots and set your coffee pot. This is very easily done. I will admit :flushing with embarrassment: that my eleven year old son showed me how to do this. I hadn't paid much attention to the clock until my guys reminded me that I could set up the coffee maker and night to wake up to that MMMMmmmm, Coffee! in the morning. One added feature to this pot (My son also pointed this out. No, he does not drink coffee) - is the ability to sneak a cup of coffee before the entire reservoir has drained. No fuss - no mess!
As silly as it sounds I really do enjoy the luxury of waking up to fresh coffee all ready to be poured when I get up. My mornings are very hectic as I have to get myself ready for work, our three boys up, showered and supervise their breakfast, attire and last minute matters - and leave the house around 7:30. That is not easy for a night owl...
Unless they own a Black & Decker 12 Cup Space Maker Programmable Coffee Pot....
*Note: To keep your coffee pot running well and looking like new I offer these suggestions:
1. Once a month pour one cup of white vinegar in the
reservoir and run
run through the coffee maker. This helps keep the
components clean and working well.
2. If you have hard well water (as we do), be sure you
use a water softener for the water you bring into your
home. It will taste better and keep your electronic
appliances (hot water heater, coffee pot etc.). This
will also prolong the use of said appliances (and
plumbing and septic systems). If you can't use a water
softener for your hard water, use bottled water.
3. On occasion (I do this weekly) add some dishwasher
detergent to the pot and let it soak. This will
remove coffee stains from your coffee pot. this also
works well on teapots, mugs, cups and other kitchen items.
