Here's what's WRONG with the B&D Undercounter Coffee Maker!

Pros Under-the-counter and out of the way, easy to use programming and time set, stop-brew feature is cool, larger capacity,
Cons Untreated water can cause problems with brewing, as the water lines get clogged easily
Recommended it? No
If you have well-water, or hard water, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! It does not perform well with hard water or untreated water.

My parents live in an extreme rural area, and bought this product for their new house. They have well water, and the water table is fortified by the Lake of the Ozarks.

During the first year they had this B&D coffeemaker, they were both working out of town and would come home every third week. So, coffee was made once a day for three or four days in a row, then the machine would sit idle for another three weeks.

They bought this specific brand because it had just a few features that they liked. It has a timer, where you can program a start time, and an automatic shut-off, because they were always leaving their Krups on and the house would develop that burned-coffee smell - ugh.

It also had an automatic shut-off when the coffee pot itself was removed, for my Dad, who likes his coffee STRONG, and is just like that guy in that commercial...can't wait for the coffee to brew and sticks his head under the basket to lap it up like a dog as it's brewing!

They began encountering problems with it almost from the start. It would take over 20 minutes to brew one pot. They took it back to WalMart and exchanged it for another one. The second one lasted a little longer, but when it took vinegar and water cleanings everytime they used it to get the thing to brew, it was time to find another solution. This one lasted long enough for WalMart to say they wouldn't take it back, but to take it to a B&D fix-it shop. I took it for them, and as soon as I set the thing on the counter, the woman just reached behind her and got a new one out in exchange. I asked how she knew what I was there for, and she said she "had a feeling". LOL! So, my parents are on their third B&D coffee maker in three years, and recently added a water softener.

This negative impression has been burned into my memory, and now with our kitchen renovation under way, we're looking to replace our old coffee maker with a new one that isn't almond. I'm wondering if B&D has cornered the market on under-the-counter coffee makers, as I can't seem to find another brand anywhere I go. We have treated water here, but I'm still wary.

So, onward I go, in my quest for the perfect under-the-counter coffee maker. Wish me luck, that I find it. If not, it's back to the counter top for us, before I'll buy a B&D.
