In the distant small appliance history, General Electric made a line of "Spacemaker" appliances that were handsomely styled, well designed and reliable. I have a specific situation which has limited counter space and these appliances were the answer!
Well, gradually the toaster oven, can opener and coffee maker all died (the microwave is still fine!) slow deaths. When I replaced them, they were now Black and Decker appliances, once a good name in power tools. They had been modernized in styling, but it soon became apparent that the quality had suffered in the name change.
The last appliance to be replaced was this coffeemaker. And what a disappointment it proved to be. While it still had the removable water container, the valve on it always leaked a bit and left water in the receptacle which is hidden... and could turn to mold. An extra and hard to clean step. The brewing basket is very wide and flat, and anyone who's been around drip coffee makers knows that cone shaped filters are the best; after all, the drip coffee system was invented by Melitta in the first part of the last century and is cone shaped! So the coffee was never really correctly brewed, especially for the full twelve cup capacity of this machine.
The timer is behind a plastic door of such cheap construction that the retaining clip broke off immediately. But the worst problem was that the non stick coating on the warming plate quickly started peeling off. I called Black and Decker and was transferred around; the company had been sold to a company called Windmere. They said they were aware of the problem and had me cut the cord off of my machine, mail it to them and they sent me another one. Without a coffee maker in this location for two weeks.
Well, the plastic retainer on the door quickly broke off and the non stick coating lasted even less time than the one before. Even though I was still under the warranty, I just didn't want to fool with this inferior product any longer and have more crowded counters with working appliances.
