The Bottom Line:
For the reasons stated - ease of use, price, attractiveness, I would recommend this coffee maker who does not need bells and whistles.
The relatively new Mr. Coffee machine my Mother had never worked right from the very first day. It would overflow all over the counter when brewing and the burner did not work. If you did not drink the coffee when it was first brewed, you would get warm, but not hot coffee. I don't know if she got a defective product of what.
So, this past Mother's day my brother and I decided to get her a new coffee maker. At first, we picked out a very nice one with all the bells and whistles costing about $50.00. It was very attractive. As we began walking to the check out line, we spotted another coffee maker that looked just like the $50.00 one, but this one had just one red button on it and no other controls.
My mother is not one to learn how to use "complicated machines" including vcr's and programmable televisions.
Recalling the number of times I have to help her turn on the tv, the one button feature of the Black and Decker Smartbrew caught my attention.
We checked the price - $19.95. Compared the two products - both very attractive. Noted that our Mother would never use any of the added features of the more expensive product and purchased the Black and Decker. We felt a little guilty that the price was so cheap.
Just as we expected, our Mother was able to plug the coffee maker in and use it without special instructions. It made coffee without spilling out all over the counter. And, the coffee stayed hot as long as necessary. She was most impressed (believe it or not) that it made up to 12 cups of coffee at a time. "Wow, it makes 12 cups!"
