The Bottom Line:
The simple features this coffeemaker offers allows you to easily brew delicious coffee every time.
I'm a coffee lover. So when my coffee maker that I'd had for 10 years was ruined I was quite upset... it got cleaned with bleach water rather than white vinegar! ::eek:: To make up for the mistake, my husband set out to buy me a new coffeemaker for my birthday. The ruined coffeemaker was a Black & Decker model that is no longer sold. So he chose the Black & Decker Smartbrew 12-cup Coffeemaker and he made a great choice!
The unit itself is compact and takes up less space than my previous coffeemaker, which was a big plus for me. The carafe itself has ergonomic handle which makes it easy to pick up and hold. The carafe also has water-fill lines on both sides of the carafe in addition to lines that indicate the actual amount of coffee that will be brewed. The spout on the carafe is wide and thin which means no spills or drips when pouring!
The coffee basket is lifted out of a top compartment rather than pulled out of the side. I liked this because it doesn't matter which order I fill the coffee and the water reservoirs.
The coffeemaker brews coffee much more quickly that my other model. That is a big plus. I haven't used the "Sneak a Cup" feature too much because of the fast brewing but it's still nice to know that I can interrupt the brewing to get my first cup of the day! The interrupt feature is activated by simply removing the carafe from the hotplate... no fumbling to press buttons. Note: I would not recommend interrupting the brewing process after only a couple of cups as the coffee is VERY strong at this point.
My previous Black & Decker model had the delayed brewing and auto-shutoff features that are not present in this model. Personally, I never used them much so I don't miss them. If those are features that are important to you then the Smartbrew does come in Plus and Deluxe models which offer those as well as other features.
Overall I am extremely pleased with my Black & Decker Smartbrew and would definitely recommend it!
