The Bottom Line:  This is a no bells and whistles coffeemaker, which is what we wanted. Simple to use, simple to clean.
First of all, we almost never drink coffee. I wanted something for the occasional cup of coffee, mostly for company, and something for hot water for hot chocolate in the winter months. I wasn't looking for bells and whistles, and believe me this coffee maker doesn't have them, but it was inexpensive, looked good and it has served it's purpose.

We picked this up at Wal-Mart while hunting for a coffee maker. Something simple that wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out. Something to brew coffee or heat water. This is what I found.

Black & Decker SmartBrew is a 12-cup coffeemaker. We got the lowest model they had. Turn it on, turn it off. Easy, fast and simple. You take the carafe and fill it to the desired mount of water. lift the lid on the top that covers the water reservoir and pour it in. There is a clear window on the reservoir as well, so you can see how much water was poured in. Because ours is under the cabinet, if I don't pull it out far enough sometimes I spill some water and this helps me know how much I need to replace.

When you lift the lid, you will also see the removable brew basket, which is where you place the filter and coffee. This is a nice feature because it is easy to take out, empty and clean and put back.

For cleaning, Black & Decker recommends using a soft cloth on a cool machine to clean the outside. DO NOT immerse in water. For the carafe, use hot sudsy water and clean carefully so you do not accidentally knock it into something causing it to break.

For the inside of the machine, from mineral deposits, pour white vinegar into the reservoir up to the 6 cup line and add cold water to the 10 cup line. Place a paper filter into the filter basket and turn on the coffeemaker. When it reaches the 5 cup level, turn it off and let is all soak for at least 15 minutes. Then turn it back on and let it finish. Rinse the carafe and filter basket thoroughly, and of course throw the used filter away.

Other than the things I have already listed, there is an on/off switch. On is left, Off is right. That's it. No timer's, nothing fancy, but then I didn't want that either. I just wanted something that worked and worked well, and this coffeemaker does.
