The Bottom Line:
Disposable carpet cleaner, if you don't mind replacing yearly this is a great carpet cleaner.
We purchased our Bissell ProHeat carpet cleaner for a great deal at BigLots. We had poor experiences with this same exact cleaner which a friend let us borrow, however the low price bait and switched us into buying one.
We purchased the Bissell for its low price and features compared to similar Hoovers. One major selling point was the seperate solution and water tanks in which the machine mixes the solution for you. The SmartMix was a great feature as you do not have to mix your solution in the water tank like the previous Hoover carpet cleaner I owned, and you can switch to water rinse without having to empty the tank and starting with a fresh batch of water only. The water heating was a benefit as well due to the fact we have our water heater set to an energy saving 120 degrees.
The machine is a breeze to use assuming it is not malfunctioning. You fill the solution tank and fill the waste/fresh water tank with hot tap water. You select the amount of cleaning solution to be mixed with the water. There are setting for water/rinse only, a normal setting and a high traffic setting. There are two switches on the backside of the machine for power and water heating. The owners manual reccommends turning the machine on and waiting a minute or two for the water to heat, I usually skipped this step so I would not have to tilt the machine back to keep the brush from tearing up my carpet. The machine worked as well as my prior Hoover SpinScrub, it does however leave tufts of carpet fibers all over the place which the Hoover did not and does not seem to extract water as well as the Hoover. Cleaning performance is just as well as with the Hoover.
The machine has provided about a year of good service however despite meticulous maintenance (cleaning and such after every use) it has already given up the ghost. Starting about the 3rd use the solution tank began leaking anytime it was in its housing. Even with the SmartMix dial set to water it would leak solution all over the floor, we were never able to fix this issue. So after every use we would have to pour the solution back in the bottle and leave the solution tank empty during storage. The last time I used the machine (yesterday) the SmartMix quit working altogether. When set on anything above water (Normal or High Traffic) the machine sprays nothing but solution, I ended up using the rinse function on my carpet for 30 minutes trying to get all the soap out. Cleaning the SmartMix indicator and filter made no change. The machine is now junk after a year.
This is a disposable carpet cleaner. No amount of maintenance will keep this thing running and at its low price its almost pointless to have it repaired. I have read nothing but bad things about Bissell products and all the negative reviews of this machine are all true. Avoid this product unless you plan on replacing it on a yearly basis.
