The Bottom Line:
I cannot recommend this machine based on its apparent lack of cleaning
I bought this machine today (5/13/06) to replace my Hoover Steamvac Dual V which had a defective water tank (the major design flaw with that product).
I was hoping for a machine that would clean as well as the Hoover but be a little better designed. I was wrong.
The Bissell is easy to assemble right out of the box. The design is elegant, as elegant as a carpet cleaner can be. It had a convenient carrying handle on the front that makes lifting it up stairs very nice.
I liked the simplicity of the water tank system on this cleaner. It uses one area for both the clean and dirty water. The clean water is held in a soft rubbery bladder in the dirty water tank. As the clean water goes out, the dirty water comes in using the same volume. A very ingenious solution.
This cleaner is very quiet as carpet cleaners go. The brushes are belt driven and you at first have to look and see if they are going because they are quiet.
I was not impressed with the results this cleaner returned. I have used my Hoover many times and know what to expect from the water coming out of the dirty water tank. The Hoover would consistently return water with the color of 1/2 strength chocolate milk. This machine was returning water with the color of Chicago city water. Not really dirty but surely not clean.
The cleaner was set on the "Heavy Traffic" setting and it used 1/4 of a gallon of solution to clean a 20x25 living room and a 20x4 hallway. Very heavy usage. In this space with my Hoover, I would have gone through 5 tanks of water (they seem to both carry about the same amount of clean water when full). The Bissell only used two during this whole cleaning time. With the small amount of water it put down, I can see why it wasn't picking up much dirty water.
The cleaning path is narrower than I would like. It took more time with this machine than with the Hoover Steamvac Dual V, even figuring in water refills on the Hoover because you have to first clean, the change the dial to rinse and then rinse. Double the work is required. I also had to make multiple passes over the same areas I was confident making one pass with my other machine.
The Bissell did not like to pick up accumulated lint. It balled it up and would drop it under the machine from time to time. Much like having and electric cat leaving you hairballs except this machine did it while you were awake instead of at 3am.
I cannot recommend this machine, even if it is $75 less than the Hoover and has what appear to be a more durable water tank design. I returned it to the store and am buying replacement parts for the Hoover.
