Giving Bissell a Second Chance

Pros Heavy-Duty, seems sturdy
Cons Need to be a weigh-lifter to move this thing around
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Excellent cleaning power, deeps cleans the dirtiest carpets! Has a two year warranty!
Why, oh, why? For those of you who have followed my Epinions career, you know I have a tendency to give bad products and bad companies a second chance, while having extraordinary luck, products, and service sometimes causes me to go to a different vendor. Go figure! If you have read my Epinion on the piece of junk, Bissell's Little green steam cleaner, you would think I would never buy another Bissell product in my life. That is what makes life interesting in the duckling household. Basically, we got tired of renting steam cleaners from the hardware store or paying $100's to have professionally cleaned carpets, plus with two boys with juice boxes or as my two year old calls them, jooooof cupth, running around, failing to grasp the concept of drinking those in the kitchen not on the carpet, it was time to invest in one of our own.

There were other choices out there but truthfully, the Bissell carpet shampoo and cleaner was the deciding factor. That part of their product works, plus we did get a great price on teh Pro-Heat, Pro-tect, on sale. The Bissell name, we cannot get two bad products from the same company, can we? The answer is "no", this machine can clean.

The box did scare me with "some assembly required" and some assembly required usually defines "more than JBduckling can handle." This was not the case, only a screwdriver was needed, a few screws, plastic snaps, and some tightening of a bolt was all that was needed. A pleasant surprise. If I can assemble it, anyone can!

The SmartClean system mixes your hot water with the cleaning solution as it is applied to the carpet. Heated solution must be good, right? Along with the solution, power brush, and suction to clean carpets masterfully! OK, let's go!

How difficult is it to mix the solutions? Not at all! There is a bottle, a container of sorts, at the base of the machine. You fill the bottle with the Bissell Fiber Cleansing formula, replace the bottle back on the base of the machine. Bissell calls this the SmartMix custom control.

Next is the Tank-in-tank system which is a bladder inside the machine for clean water. When you use the clean water, the dirty solution will collect in the tank, using the space displaced by the water! Ah yes, simple engineering. I filled the tank in the bathtub, gives me more area for spillage and general male messyness. Note: Trust the tank handle! It does work, lift and carry! On my first attempt, I expected the tank to shatter, leak, do all sorts of crazy things, but it does work and fit nicely into the machine. No leakage, unlike it's little cousin, the Little Green! Trust the handle, trust the rotation to put in place!

SmartTemp, temperature controlled heating of the cleaning solution as it is being applied to the carpet seems to work well. There is a ready light on the base of the machine plus both on-off switches must be activated for SmartTemp to work. OK, I have the machine put together, I have the cleaning solution and hot water installed, we are ready for the test!

First, wait two minutes for the heater to warm up, turn both switches on! We did do a massive vacuuming of the room before hand, however, there was one major spill we could not clean up. Now we are ready, there is a trigger switch on the handle, allowing you to control the cleaning formula. Remember, as I did the hard way, more solution is not necessarily better! Do not soak! I had to go over certain early test areas with just the vacuum bladder to soak up the excess formula, plus the solution is expensive, too! Plan a pattern, similar to vacuuming, make sure you leave an exit path to the door.

Go Slow! Give the solution and the temperature time to work! Bissell calls their beater brush the "DirtLifter PowerBrush." It floats along the carpet, rather than a fixed beater and supposedly works better. The brush seems to deep clean fine. Watch the flow indicator on the base. It spins when the trigger is pressed, indicating solution being applied. Stops spinning? Time for a refill of the formula and water!

Initial passes over the carpet with the ProHeat gives you a big eeeeeeeewwwwwwwww! We cannot believe our carpets were that dirty! Keep going over certain carpet areas until solution is clean(er). Continue going over the carpet without the trigger to pull up excess water/solution. With the carpet this dirty, we did use the final water rinse, carpet protector which is a warm water rinse to remove any remaining embedded dirt. Time elapsed for a smaller kids bedroom, about 14 x 14? About thirty minutes with the final rinse. One load of solution and water did the trick and the other rooms took less time, as we became more experienced with the cleaner.

Observations of the product were positive for the most part, the negative is the weight, this is really heavy! Some lighter folks might have difficulty moving it around. It does have larger wheels so scientifically, it should wheel with minimum effort. Other negative is the cord length, we ran over it once, not paying attention. It is not automatic as we are used to on our vacuum. Expense, the Bissell cleaners work wonderful, but expensive.

Positives: It worked well, it cleaned our carpets excellent, just as good as some professionals we've used, better than the rent-a-can. It removed most heavy duty stains with pretreating, and deep cleaned to our approval. We decided to test the "ScotchGard application, that was easy to use and hopefully, effective. We also have the "Perfect pass" option, which tells the correct speed for best cleaning. For a mechanical idiot like me, that is a necessity! Over-all, the cleaning experience is excellent! Once we got the "hang" of it, the machine worked well! Just a little heavy and clumsy.

Cleaning and maintenance are easy. The water tank with dirty water is easy to dump, all plastic tools are easy to rinse and clean. Clean out the flow indicator as there is a tendency to gather lint in that area. Wipe and dry!

Other options for this the ProHeat includes bare floor cleaning, upholstery and small area cleaning with provided attachments. We have not used either at this time. Did the Bissell ProHeat work, the answer is yes! It is fairly easy to use and cleans effectively!
