Excellent carpet, awful bare floor

Pros Exceptional rug cleaning, smart attachments.
Cons Absolutely, positively, excessively terrible on bare floors (picked up NOTHING).
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Get it only if you have few or no bare floors.
After our old reliable Eureka (going on 30) canister's engine finally gave up its ghost (which was sudden and recent, no problems at all in 30 years!) we did some comparison shopping and were attracted to the Bissell. Since it was on sale that day, we decided to get it.

Brought it home, easy minor assembly and off we went.

We have the usual "WOW" reaction to its rug cleaning ability, coming up with a heap(!) of dirt in the canisters. Amazing how well it works on rugs. No question there.

Then we turned to bare floor (wood and stained concrete).

Nothing. Couldn't even pick up a crumb.

We couldn't believe it. I mean this thing could not picked up ANY crumbs on hard floors, of which we have a good amount. We called the Bissell Techies and they guided us through "unclogging" and troubleshooting (of which there couldn't have been much, since we've owned our vacuum for less than an hour).

We're more of a meat and potatoes results couple. Accessories (i.e. detachable canister, weight, color, etc.) are all nice but in the end does it vacuum, bottom line? Bottom line is absolutely yes (rug) and absolutely no (bare floors).

We're disappointed in that we really were rooting for this thing to work well... we liked the bagless system and detachable canister, but in the end we are facing returning it because it performed so absolutely and surprisingly poorly on non-rug surfaces. We're thinking that all of the high reviews are from people with little/no bare floor vacuuming. I mean, it's just unbelievable the contrast between its performance between rug and bare floor.

We are still wondering whether this is a defective unit since it's picking up NOTHING on bare floors. We have seen a few reviews here mentioning that, but not as many as one would expect, given the abysmal performance of this machine in that instance. Are we missing something?

We're not totally trashing it because it's designed well, has smart innovations and seems to be a real value compared to the Dysons and comparable models out there. But we can't understand why consumer testers like it so much unless we're the only people who experienced it cleaning NOTHING up off our bare floors.

In the end, buy this machine by all means if you have almost exclusively rug and "edge" (moulding, blinds, upholstery, etc.) vacuuming.

Unfortunately, we'll have to say stay far, far away from it if you have significant bare floors.

Oh, one other thing, apparently the "cool red color" is either only in some parts of the country, or now replaced, or we're totally color blind. Ours is gray (no red on it).
