Most Relaxing Sandals Made

Pros They almost become part of you
Cons Arch support is good but not great
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you cannot walk on a beach in the tropics, walking around in Birks is the next best thing
I bought my first pair of Birkenstock Arizonas in 1996, and I still have that pair. I loved them then, and I love them now.

My brother put the Birkenstock bug in my ear, so I ventured out to a store, tried on a few pair of Birks, and walked around the store to get a feel for them. I initially looked at a pair of Birks Milanos because I really liked the back strap. However, they rubbed my ankle in the short time I was wearing them. Therefore, I took a chance on the Arizonas, and it was a very good decision.

The lack of a back strap made me a little anxious at first. On a few occasions, I have unintentionally kicked off one of my Birks while walking along. It is hard to describe, but over time, your feet just sort of become accustomed to the feel of Birks such that they tend to stay on your feet. It is almost some sort of weird Zen thing. Birks, at least for me, seem to impart a feeling of relaxation. Could be that because there is no back strap I know I cannot just go sprinting down the street.

My wife would just roll her eyes at any talk of things Zen, but the Birks bug bit her twice. She has a pair of Arizonas and a pair of Floridas that she really loves. Her Birks Floridas were the only thing she wore during her first pregnancy, and after she wore them out, she had them rebuilt.

I bought a second pair of Birks Arizonas Jerry Garcia collection a couple years ago. Still have them and still love them, although they are not quite as broken in as my original Birks.

I have had my original Birks rebuilt once, and it did not change their character or comfort. For that reason, as you wear out a good, comfortable pair of Birks, you will want to get them rebuilt rather than buy new.

Birks are sized European, but you really should try them on in the store to make sure they feel and fit right. I bought my second pair over the Internet because I knew the size and style were the same as my first pair. This statement will horrify internet shoe stores, but in my opinion, you should ALWAYS buy shoes in a brick and mortar store to ensure they fit right.

Birks can be something of an acquired taste, and they definitely do have to get broken in through some daily wear before you will grow to love them. However, once you get them broken in, weather permitting there is little else you will want to wear.

Arch support is not ideal, and they do make a high arch version in many Birks styles that one might want to check out.
