Futuristic Family Fun
Pros
Family fun, sweet, touching
Cons
Large time gaps
Recommended it?
Yes
?Bicentennial Man? is based on the book by Isaac Asimov. I remember when 'Bicentennial Man' first came out, it got a bad wrap. I honestly thought this was an enjoyable family movie. No it does not have tons of action, violence, or nudity. But the movie had a story line that worked and realistic characters that brought the whole thing together. This is a sweet movie that the family can watch together and enjoy.
The Plot:
The movie itself spans over two centuries. So if you notice me saying ?Over Time? a lot, now you know why.
Robin Williams plays a household robot named Andrew Martin. Andrew starts out as a regular robot but then he starts to have human emotions. Slowly over time he begins to have full human emotions.
(Over time) Andrew grows feelings for one of his adopted family members, whom he calls Little Miss. She does not believe that a robot and a human can have any type of relations. Their love goes unrequited. Thus making Andrew saddened.
So he (Andrew the robot) leaves on an endeavor to find other robots that experience emotions. This takes years upon years. He finally meets an emotional robot but she ends up to be a fake. She has a personality chip that gives her emotions. (Unlike Andrew, with no chip.) The female robot's owner and Andrew become friends as Andrew funds the owners expenses in robot technology.
(Over more time) Andrew meets the full-grown daughter of ?Little Miss? and they do not hit it off at first. They become friends over time and slowly become closer. Andrew once again has feelings for a female human that does not believe robot-human relations.
He decides the only way to make her love him is to become human. Andrew goes back to the female robot's owner and has him slowly transform Andrew into human by replacing various body parts, organs and whatnot till he is fully human. (Well as fully human as a robot can be.) After Andrew becomes humanoid robot, his human female crush finally expresses her love for Andrew.
And they live happily ever after? NOPE not gonna tell!
I won?t spoil the end for you, but this is a tear jerker. So, girls (and some guys) get those Kleenex ready.
More:
-Robin Williams does an excellent job as Andrew. I was so happy to see him doing this kind of enjoyable work again. In fact he looks about 20 years younger. (OK maybe 10 years.)
-So you are wondering about ?The Pepsi Girl? huh? Well yes Hallie Kate Eisenberg is in this movie, but only for around 10 full minutes. In fact you may not find her name anywhere near the credits online. Personally, I think Hallie is adorable and did an out standing job in ?Bicentennial Man?.
-Bicentennial Man is directed to a mature audience with a pallet for dramas. But hidden inside this movie is a sweet romance and a small amount of comedy. With very little profanity, this movie is a good family movie. I recommend it for children over 11 years old.
Although I must point out, my 4 year old daughter watched the first hour of Bicentennial Man without blinking an eye or budging. She sat and watched as if she had never seen a family Sci-fi movie. I am sure she would have made it through the whole movie except for the fact that she fell asleep. Some children (and adults) will not sit still because there is no action scenes.
-I still do not know or understand why this movie did so poorly. I can assume it is because of the time gaps in the story line. But without the time gaps, the movie would go on forever. (The story line spans two centuries.) I recommend you check ?Bicentennial Man? out for yourself, if you haven?t already.
Other Picks:
?Disney?s Dinosaur? coming soon on video (Fun to watch for people of all ages.)
?Windaria? on video now (Timeless children?s Sci-fi.)
?The Iron Giant? on video now (Excellent Sci-fi for kids and parents!)
