A telling book on the nature of mass media in the US

The Bottom Line:
An interesting analysis of the power of the mass media and its impact. It is slightly flawed but good in its examination and trends.
The two biggest revelation to me in the book are that bias is not perceived by the fourth estate simply because there is a lack of perception. If everyone is like yourself then there is no bias. If there is no perception of bias then the rest of the world is controversial not yourself.
The second revelation is that there was an executive in charge of keeping Dan Rather happy. The poor guy lost his job after Dan Rather left. I kind of imagine this guy running around making phone calls keeping track of Dan's movements on this spreadsheet somewhere.
As for the rest of the book its not too unusual to see that the emperor has no clothes. The power of the mass media emerged in the 1960's and it exists today. Given the march of technology and the impact of mass media its not too unusual for bias to exist.
And now the media must contend with the vast power and the immediacy of the Internet. It would be interesting to see what Mr. Goldberg thinks about that.
I find that I agree with a lot that he has to say in his book. It would have interesting to find out what happened to Mr. Goldberg a few years after he wrote the book.
I did not like the way the book was written. The author weaves fact and opinion into the book. It would have been better if he confined himself to the facts in one chapter and then opinion in the next. But I did like the style of the book. The narrative was simple, easy to read and compelling.
