Easy Pizza at Home

Pros Fast and easy, inexpensive to make, kids love it
Cons Sticky dough can be hard to spread evenly on pan
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  What an easy snack to make, and my daycare children enjoyed making AND eating this pizza!
Having a daycare with seven school aged children is fun, but when school gets out they are full of energy and ready to eat their snacks, and it's a little hectic. (I don't usually get a "hi" from them, just "what's for snack?").

I discovered this winter that my kids really like to bake! We often make muffins for breakfast, and they help me make snacks from time to time. Making pizza was one of their favorite snack meals so far!

I used to make all of my own bread, then I purchased a bread machine and that went by the wayside. When I saw the packages of Betty Crocker Pizza Crust Mix on sale for 79 cents, I decided it would be a good activity for the kids to make their own after school snack.

Description

This pizza crust mix is a powdered mix, which comes in a 6 1/2 ounce bag. Everything you need to make a pizza crust is included! All you have to add is water! How great is that?

The bag says it's easy prep and lets you know without reading the directions that you simply add water. It states that this makes one crust, and the "Box Tops for Education" logo is in the top right hand corner of the bag.

How Easy Is It?

Betty Crocker couldn't have made pizza crust any easier to make! This powdered mix already contains the yeast, salt, baking soda, as well as dried egg, milk and oils!

One of my kids dumped the contents into a medium sized bowl, added one half cup of hot water and mixed it up with a wooden spoon. The mixture soon formed into a ball, and then the directions said to let it sit and rest for about 5 minutes.

While it was "resting", I got out my pizza pan (the one without the holes all over it!), and let the kids spread a thin layer of vegetable oil around the pan and up the sides a bit. When it's time to spread the dough into the pan, it was a little messy, and the dough was sticking to their hands. I suggest either kneading this gently a few times in a bit of flour, or oiling your hands while working with the dough so it doesn't stick. When we made it, I oiled their hands and this worked fine. Two of the kids worked at getting the dough in shape, which took a few minutes to get it nice and uniform.

My pizza pan is for a large sized pizza, and we found they were getting some bare spots as they spread the dough too thin in a few areas - if it stretches too far it will simply break. After working it for a while, they figured out how to get the dough evenly over the pan and up the sides 1/4" or so.

Next came the toppings. The package has some suggestions for adding 1 cup of pizza sauce, cheese and condiments. We didn't have any pizza sauce on hand, so we used Ragu spaghetti sauce, which worked GREAT! Two more kids spread the sauce around with the back part of a spoon, then they took the tines of a fork to get it distributed evenly over the crust.

While this was being done, the last two kids shredded mozzarella cheese, and after adding that over the sauce, they layered slices of pepperoni. We were done!

Pop it into the 450 degree oven and we have a homemade pizza in about 15 minutes!

Ingredients

Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Enriched Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil, Dextrose, Dried Yeast, Salt, Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Disodium Phosphate), Egg, Nonfat Milk, Soy Flour.

Thoughts

One pizza wouldn't be enough to feed seven kids at lunch time, but it was plenty for an after school snack. I only had a slim slice of this, to see how it turned out, and it wasn't bad.

The kids really enjoyed the pizza, partly because they took a lot of pride and ownership in making it themselves! They all told their parents when they got picked up that they made pizza for snack!

This mix makes it so easy that I would feel comfortable allowing a child aged 12 and up making it by themselves, as long as I felt comfortable they knew how to operate the oven, and I was also at home at the time.

The crust wasn't as thick as I'd have liked, and it didn't exactly taste like yeast bread, but it was fine for a snack, and it sure made an inexpensive one at that. The spaghetti sauce worked great too! If you ever run out of pizza sauce, I highly recommend trying spaghetti sauce instead.

If your kids like to help out in the kitchen, I highly recommend your picking up a bag of Betty Crocker Pizza Crust Mix and letting them help you make it. And don't forget to save the Boxtops for Education, each one is worth 10 cents to your favorite school!
