Best Years of Our Lives is arguably the best "homecoming" film ever made. Written by Robert E. Sherwood, this movie gives a frank and realistic view of three returning servicemen and how each adjusts to life after World War II.

Fredric March is Al Stephenson, middle-aged family man and... Read full review »

The Best Years of Our Lives: A True WW II Blockbuster

They don't make World War II movies like they used to -- before all of the special effects that modern movie fans expect in much-hyped "blockbusters" like Pearl Harbor, whose previews didn't inspire me to buy a ticket. But when AMC or TCM shows The Best Years of Our Lives, I must drop what I'm... Read full review »

In behind-the-scenes early Hollywood, few rivalries were as bitter as the one between producer Samuel Goldwyn and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer CEO Louis B. Mayer. One of the original movie wheeler-dealers, Goldwyn found himself over-leveraged when a mid-1920s merger of Metro and Goldwyn studios occurred; in... Read full review »

The war is over. The days of veterans returning home to ticker-tape parades and throngs of well-wishers are long over too.  As the nation moves forward, more and more veterans return home to find that at first glance, not much has changed. But beneath the surface, everything has changed. The film... Read full review »

Time to talk about one of my other loves, I think. Forget the fact that Teresa Wright is 86 years old and I'm 23, through the magic of cinema, the lovely, sweet Teresa will always be 28. Why that age? It's the age she was when she appeared in William Wyler's masterpiece "The Best Years of Our... Read full review »

I'm actually nervous writing this review because it's so difficult to actually put my finger on why I am so very emotionally attached to this film. So, bear with me as I write my very personal opinion about why this is one of the most important films ever made -- anywhere in the world. Ever.

I know a lot of people put "It's A Wonderful Life" on their list of all time favorites. When it was released in 1946, it was nominated for an Oscar as best picture, but didn't win. I doubt that a lot of people have either seen or heard of the film that defeated the Frank Capra classic. With all due... Read full review »

The Best Years Of Our Lives - Dvd Fullscreen Myrna Loy, William Wyler

Perhaps the most memorable film about the aftermath of World War II, THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES unfolds with the homecoming of three veterans to the same small town. The leads all touch emotional truths: Myrna Loy seems able to express longing, joy, fear and surprise--mostly with her back turned--in a particularly poignant welcome home. The movie never glosses over the reality of altered lives and the inability to communicate the experience of war on the front lines or the home front. A landmark achievement. WWII vet Harold Russell, who lost his hands in the war, is the only person to win two Oscars for the same role, Best Supporting Actor and a special Oscar "for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance."

The Best Years of Our Lives [VHS]

Winner of seven Academy Awards, including best picture, director, actor, and screenplay, William Wyler's brilliant drama about domestic life after World War II remains one of the all-time classics of American cinema. Inspired by a pictorial article about returning soldiers in Life magazine, the story focuses on three war veterans (Fredric March, Dana Andrews, and Harold Russell in unforgettable roles) and their rocky readjustment to civilian life in their Midwestern town of Boone City. Capturing the contradictory moods of America in the mid to late 1940s, this three-hour drama spans a complex range of honest emotions, from joyous celebration and happy reunion to deep-rooted ambivalence and reassessment of personal priorities. A movie milestone when released in 1946, The Best Years of Our Lives still packs a punch with powerful, timeless themes. --Jeff Shannon

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) DVD

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) Myrna Loy, Fredric MarchDirector: Wi lliam WylerCo-stars: Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Hoagy Carmichael, Gladys George, Steve Cochran172 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD: Region 1The postwar classic The Best Years of Our Lives, based on a novel in verse by MacKinlay Kantor about the difficult readjustments of returning World War II veterans, tells the intertwined homecoming stories of ex-sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March), former bombadier Fred Derry (Dana Andrews), and sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell). Having rubbed shoulders with blue-collar Joes for the first time in his life, Al finds it difficult to return to a banker's high-finance mindset, and he shocks his co-workers with a plan to provide no-collateral loans to veterans. Meanwhile, Al's children (Teresa Wright and Michael Hall) have virtually grown up in his absence. Fred discovers that his wartime heroics don't count for much in the postwar marketplace, and he finds himself unwillingly returning to his prewar job as a soda jerk. His wife (Virginia Mayo), expecting a thrilling marriage to a glamorous flyboy, is bored and embittered by her husband's inability to advance himself, and she begins living irresponsibly, like a showgirl. Homer has lost both of his hands in combat and has been fitted with hooks; although his family and his fiancée (Cathy O'Donnell) adjust to his wartime handicap, he finds it more difficult. Profoundly relevant in 1946, the film still offers a surprisingly intricate and ambivalent exploration of American daily life; and it features landmark deep-focus cinematography from Gregg Toland, who also shot Citizen Kane. The film won Oscars for, among others, Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for March, and Best Supporting Actor for Harold Russell, a real-life double amputee whose hands had been blown off in a training accident.
