THE BEST OF BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS is of interest mainly for the glimpse it affords into the early incarnations of songs such as "Soul Rebel," "Natural Mystic," and "Trench Town Rock," which were later to appear on Marley's internationally successful Island Records releases. The sound quality of many of these cuts is rustic, to say the least, and some of them are obviously part of the Lee Perry sessions from the early '70s that Perry later sold the rights to, much to the Wailers' chagrin and ire. Nevertheless, hearing these songs in their unfinished states, many of them with completely different rhythms from their more popular versions, is an entertaining peek into the mind of Marley the writer as his ideas, influenced by American groups such as the Impressions and the Temptations, slowly took shape in the late '60s and early '70s. There's also the added plus of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer's harmonies, arguably far superior to those of the I-Threes who replaced...
