The Bottom Line:
I am very impressed with this unit. 180 degrees better than the Bel 995 I recently returned.
After being thoroughly disappointed with the Vector 995 which I returned, I bought a Bel RX65 because I got it for a good price. The Vector 995 was the worst detector I ever bought but Bel has redeemed themselves with the RX65. This detector is awesome. Excellent features, ease of use and most importantly, solid performance. I read all of the tests on this unit and it has received nothing but accolades and it is true. It has excellent filtering which is important to me. It is so quiet (i.e. minimum false alarms), that you will think that it is not working. It still does false, but far less than any radar detector that I have owned and I have owned them all. The unit uses an RJ11 telephone jack for a power plug. At first I was concerned about the reliability of plugging and unplugging the cord as the little clips on an RJ11 cord are prone to breaking. If you are good with electronics (You must know what you are doing!!!) you can make your own power cord like I did, by buying RJ11 4 pin plugs, 4 wire cable and a crimping tool from Radio Shack. I used these tools to make a direct wire power cable, tied into my ignition (Red is positive and Green is negative).
I really love this unit and love driving looking for radar. The smart cord is an excellent feature allowing you to mute the unit and adjust the volume from a remote location (down by the cigarette lighter).
Audio alerts are loud and the screen has bright LED's visible in sunlight.
One complaint is that my Palm Treo 600 sets off the detector when I use it. My Palm Treo set off my other detector too, made by another well known manufacturer. I have to keep the cel phone as far from the radar detector as possible (i.e. on the passenger seat while using the hands free kit).
