The Bottom Line:
While this appears flimsy and I haven't demanded much from it, Bella Cucina's Rocket Blender has performed as requested for more than six months, far more than two weeks.
This Rocket Blender surprised me today.
Lengthy bike rides last summer and fall drove me to drink, well, at least it drove me to drinking homemade protein-rich smoothies. Those beverages helped with recovery and made it possible to ride again the next day. At the start of the year the smoothies and yogurt-based drinks might be an excellent way to kick off a few months of dietary modification (dieting). Last summer I picked up this small smoothie blender - Bella Cucina Rocket Blender. At the time I wasn't interested in shopping around for the best smoothie makers.
I've had no complaints with this beverage blender, but I hadn't tested its blending, chopping, grinding, mixing, and whipping capabilities until today while preparing Tandoori Marinated Chicken. This has done an excellent job of blending various combinations of ingredients - frozen and creamy vanilla yogurt, almonds, chocolate chips, bananas, frozen and fresh fruit, and more. Today I challenged it to replace our mortar and pestle and to chop and puree. It surprised me.

The Rocket Blender is a simple blender with one speed although it has two blades, three blending cups, two lip rings and four lids as well as the power base. Two jars are tall blender cups and the third is a small grinding cup. This comes with a blending blade (cross) and grinding blade (flat). The lip ring snaps on to protect your mouth from the threaded rim that fits into the base for mixing or blending. The rim fits all three jars.
This has two solid lids for transporting. This doesn't have a sipping lid, the solid lid works for storing in the refrigerator or transporting frozen to drink later - at lunch? This has two shaker lids, one with large holes and one with two sizes of smaller holes. The various lids all screw on rather than snap like the lip ring.
The jars are high impact plastic with gray lids and rims. The power base top is trimmed with the same gray but the base is primarily chrome finish. The Rocket Blender has a 16-page instruction and recipe book. It's small with a 4 ½ inch diameter footprint.
In use
Place the ingredients for blending, chopping, grinding, or other designated purpose in a cup with the threaded rim up; tightly screw the base on before turning it over. Place the cup's base in the power base. This is a primitive arrangement. The jars have three locking tabs that fit into the power base's corresponding slots. Once the three are fit together you press down and turn slightly to lock in place. If plugged in the blade processes the ingredients. There is only one speed. If you want to chop press down without locking the tabs, then release the pressure to pulse and repeat.
I have a nice full-size blender and equally nice food processor. I also have a coffee grinder and mini-chopper and really didn't need this for anything other than blending smoothies in the drinking cup. It has been ideal for that purpose and it has been used up to five times a week for at least six months. Today I accidentally dropped my ceramic mortar and pestle on the hard tile floor and the floor won. Timing was critical so I pulled this out to grind the just-toasted cardamom, cumin, and fennel seeds to make a powder using the grinding blade. It took less than a minute to get a fine powder. A few minutes later I continued testing by chopping onions using the pulsing strategy. It worked without making mush. Once chopped it was necessary to puree the combination of onions, garlic, and ginger. That was easily achieved within two minutes.
A few points
• This is not intended for use with hot beverages - not a good choice for blending hot coffee beverages, nor should it be placed in the microwave.
• Do not overfill. Both jars have a maximum-fill line. The small cup holds six ounces, the tall cup holds 12 ounces.
• Grind your ingredients including spices and coffee beans with pulses but watch carefully and quit when you've reached either three minutes or appropriate texture, whichever comes first. If you need to blend for longer than three minutes it's recommended to wait three minutes. The motor isn't strong enough to go longer.
• Cups, rims, and lids are top-rack dishwasher safe
My thoughts, including wish it hads
Originally, when looking for a smoothie blender I wanted glass that could also handle heat and hot blended coffee drinks. I consider the primitive way of holding this down and releasing to pulse awkward so a few power buttons would have been convenient. I wish it had a on-board cord-storage at the base. One of the shaker lids could be replace by a sipping lid.
Because this is only needed/wanted for blending smoothies or iced beverages in the drinking glass I find this ideal. If you need something to chop and blend for cooking and you want a blender for smoothies but want only one appliance to do both, get a regular blender. If you drink a lot of smoothies, or you occasionally need to grind whole seeds for seasoning foods, consider this. This is not intended to replace a workhorse blender. If you've resigned yourself to sticking to a New Years resolution and see blended drinks (diet, protein and smoothies) as your approach, definitely look for Bella Cucina's 12-piece Rocket Blender. While this strikes me as flimsy and I have not demanded much from it, this little rocket blender has performed as requested for more than six months and definitely more than two weeks.
