Struck Gold with Belkin that is, but are Gold Cables a Fad?
Pros
Fast Speed, good quality
Cons
Higher Cost than regular cables
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
"A Belkin Gold Two point O" is the way to go. Determine what the cable will be used for and make a purchased based on your needs.
So what do we know about gold cables? What have you heard, that they are faster, maybe told that they give you a better connection, or perhaps a higher quality resolution on our televisions outputs? Well in some cases this might be a further stretch into printers and printing speeds.
Installation
The package contains everything you need to get a USB device connected to the PC/Mac, basically just plug and play.
USB 2.0
The truth is that this particular cable is good for many different MAC/PC devices that require a 2.0 down to the 1.0 connection as this cable is backwards compatible. If you have an older device that requires a 1.0 connection, this cable will work for that device, but it won't be able to take advantage of the faster 2.0 connection the cable provides.
Belkin at a Glance
Belkin has provided me in the past with several different sizes and cable lengths which have worked efficiently and for many years giving both a high rate of performance and quality unmatched by off brand cable companies. I'm overall satisfied with the 6' length as it reaches from my desktop down to the floor where my printer lays.
Manufactures Description (From Belkin.com)
The Gold Series Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Cable helps you achieve maximum performance from your USB devices. Now you can connect your USB printer, scanner, external hard drive, and other peripherals and enjoy clear, error-free data transmissions. Our 24k gold-plated connectors are corrosion-proof and ensure maximum conductivity. Now you can enjoy hot plug connectivity and support up to 127 devices on a daisy-chain configuration. Protected in our innovative Flextec jacket, this premium-quality cable is extremely flexible and perfect for use in tight areas.
Gold Perhaps!
What I do know is working in the industry for several years gold does provide a clear clean connection as many metallic tipped cables do. However, when it comes to printing I've tested several different USB cables and did NOT notice an increase in PPM. (Pages Per Minute) In other words it didn't make my printer go fast, However I do have a 6 year old 1.0 USB cable which is NOT gold plated and this cable has started to corrode, which has caused the cable to become worthless. Remember to buy a cable based on needs, rather than a fad.
Recommendation
Depending on what you are specifically using this cable for may merit a purchase of a less expensive USB cable. Personally I'm satisfied with my Belkin 6' Gold USB Cable, it works for several different PC peripherals I've used and has lasted several years with no issues. I would however recommend taking a look Online or purchasing possible an "Open Item" or "Used" cable as I picked up one at Best Buy for about $10 because it was returned. Same policy and if it didn't work, I'd just return it, but like I said several years and still working. Go Belkin Gold, and I'm sure you'll be good for many years to come.
