The Bottom Line:
Works exactly as advertised, and increases your access to frequently used USB ports
I bought this because like many of you my PC has just 2 USB ports on the front. Sure, the back of the case has 8, but we all know what it's like to access the back of a PC. One that is in a piece of furniture, and not easy to pull out.
Plus having to worry about pulling some cable loose when you do move it forward. So, it makes sense to attach one of these to one of the front ports and instantly gain 4 new ports, right where I needed them.
This unit comes with an AC/DC adapter, which I do use. The idea being that if you have 3 or 4 items plugged, all of the actual power each item needs will have to run through the USB port that the dock is plugged into.
Instead of drawing power from that port, if you use the adapter you get your power from the AC outlet, and lighten the load on your PC.
Now, if I was using this for just 1 item, such as a solid state storage device (key drive/flash drive) I would not be concerned about power usage through the port itself. However, I do plug in 1 high demand item, a portable hard drive, which has it's own AC plug, and uses quite a bit of power.
I also leave a 4GB flash drive plugged in, which I have configured as a memory booster using the Ready Boost feature, and I hot swap various flash drives quite frequently. I also have a dongle for my wireless keyboard/mouse system plugged in at all times.
Bottom line is that these are great devices to have, if for no other reason than you plug it in to one of the back ports and just leave it sitting on top of the PC. If you need a quick USB port you have it waiting, without using a hard to reach one in back, or tying one of the two in front.
