I'm on the band wagon!
Pros
27 hits, and they were all 'true' hits
Cons
erm, I'll have to buy the whole collection now!
Recommended it?
Yes
I've never realised what all this hype about the Beatles was about. Maybe it's something to do with being born in 1975, I've grown up with different music and The Beatles were some mythical band that were the greatest at everything they did. Having said that, I do know many of their songs (and was quite impressed) I just wasn't jumping on the band waggon.
But whilst pottering round Sainsbury's (a large supermarket chain over here)I saw that they are selling single CD's at #9.99, what a bargain eh! So I thought I'd give this album a go. (#9.99 is about $15, and whilst this may sound a lot to you guys, remember I live in the UK where things are more expensive!)
As you probably already know there are 27 number one hits on the album. Now, not all of these are US hits, but they were all No.1 in either the US or the UK, which is heartening as some greatest hits albums have tracks I'm sure were never in the charts here, maybe in Mongolia or somewhere, but never a UK or US hit.
Anyway, I digress. I listened to the album (as you do having just paid a tenner for it!) and was very, very pleasently surprised. This band are great (where's that band wagon, I want to climb aboard!) I was very surprised to find that I know all the songs on the album, and they are all consistently very good. I know most people will be expecting this from a Beatles greatest hits album, but I was most pleased to discover this for myself.
The album runs chronologically from Love Me Do, a US NO.1 in 1964, through She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night, Help... all the way through to The Long and Winding Road, another US No.1 in 1970. It must be the first album I've lisened to for a long time where the tracks are good all the way through, and so many of them. On many CD's you get 10 or 12 tracks and it lasts for about 40 minutes, but this one has 27 and lasts for nearly 80 minutes, I didn't know you could fit so much on a CD!.
It was quite bizarre finding out that the Beatles had originally performed songs I thought ad been performed by other artists. I know I'm showing my age (and naivety!) but I honestly thought Come Together ad been written by Paul Weller, embarrasing I know!
Anyway, for #10, (or even #15 ($25) (ooh, too many brackets) if you buy it elsewhere) this really is an excellent album with some classic tracks. I might have to go out and get the rest of the collection, although I'd better warn my bank manager first. Roll on band wagon, roll on.
